The Short Answer That Surprised Me

When I was preparing for my master's in Manchester, I assumed my student visa would restrict where I could live. I was wrong, but only partially. Let me break down what actually matters.

What Your Student Visa Actually Restricts

Here's what you should know: your Tier 4/Student visa doesn't legally restrict your address. You can live anywhere in the UK. What I learned is that restrictions exist around immigration compliance, not location.

You must:

  • Live at a location your university approved for your visa application
  • Inform UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) if you change address within 10 days
  • Not live in unsuitable accommodation (this is vague but real)

When I moved apartments during my studies, I had to notify UKVI. It took 15 minutes online, but it's mandatory.

The Practical Restrictions You'll Face

University Accommodation: You should know that universities often have conditions about student housing. Some require first-year students to live in halls of residence. My university required this, so I didn't have a choice; I lived in the halls the first year.

Student Visa Approval: When you apply for your student visa, you provide an address. This becomes your "approved address" for immigration purposes. If you want to move before arrival, you should update this with your university before your visa is issued. I didn't know this and had to contact UKVI after arriving.

Private Rental Complications

Here's where it gets tricky: private landlords. When I was looking for private accommodation after my first year, I encountered this issue, some landlords are hesitant to rent to international students because:

  • Visa sponsorship rules make them cautious
  • They want guarantees on payment
  • They're unfamiliar with international documentation

You should prepare:

  • Proof of funds
  • Proof of student status
  • Guarantor information (though many universities provide this)
  • References from previous accommodation

Can You Live With Friends?

Yes, absolutely. When I moved out of halls, I lived in a shared house with British and international friends. This is completely legal and common. Your only obligation is notifying UKVI of your new address.

What I found was that shared student housing is actually easier because landlords are used to students and understand the visa requirements.

The "Suitable Accommodation" Grey Area

Your visa requires you to live in "suitable" accommodation. You might wonder, what does that mean? I asked my university, and they clarified it means the following:

  • Not overcrowded
  • Safe and secure
  • With basic amenities (bathroom, kitchen, heating)

This isn't strictly enforced unless you report it yourself or there's a serious issue. But you should avoid genuinely questionable places.

Specific Restrictions by Visa Type

If you're on a student visa (most common):

  • No restrictions on where you live
  • Must update UKVI of address changes
  • Can live with anyone (family, friends, partners)

If you're on a sponsored study visa (specific employer sponsorship):

  • Slightly more complex your sponsor has different rules
  • Still not location-restricted, but your sponsor might have requirements

Campus vs. Off-Campus Living and Your Visa

Here's what surprised me: whether you live on or off campus doesn't affect your visa status at all. But practically:

  • On-campus: Easier for UKVI compliance; university handles address notification
  • Off-campus: More independence, but you're responsible for UKVI notifications

Address Notification: Don't Skip This

When I changed addresses, I was lazy about the notification. A month later, I received a letter asking why my address hadn't been updated. Nothing serious happened, but it was a hassle.

You should update your address:

  1. Immediately upon moving
  2. Through UKVI's online portal (takes 5 minutes)
  3. Keep screenshots of confirmation
  4. Inform your university too (they track this separately)

Timeline for UK Housing and Your Visa

  • At visa application: Provide approved address
  • Before arrival: Confirm accommodation with university
  • If changing before visa issuance: Update the university
  • After arrival: Any address change needs UKVI notification within 10 days

Final Reality Check

Your student visa doesn't trap you in one location. I traveled, visited friends in other cities, and stayed in different places throughout my studies. Your address on file just needs to be current. That's it.
