Getting your University of Bristol term dates down early saves a lot of stress later. It tells you when to arrive, when exams are likely to land, when you can actually go home, and how long you really need a room for. Bristol does not run on the traditional three-term calendar. It uses two teaching blocks, each with its own teaching weeks, a consolidation week, and an assessment period built in.

There is one quirk worth knowing straight away. Bristol finishes all of its first-block assessment before the winter break, so standard undergraduates do not come back to January exams the way students at some other universities do. That one detail changes how you plan your whole Christmas.

Below are the confirmed dates for 2025/26 and the published dates for 2026/27, taken from the University's own key dates calendar, plus the practical bits the official table leaves out.

How the Bristol Academic Year Is Structured

Bristol divides the year into two teaching blocks rather than three terms. Each block has the same rhythm: a run of teaching weeks, a consolidation week roughly in the middle, an assessment preparation week, and then an assessment period.

The consolidation week is something a lot of students miss when they first look at the calendar. Most schools pause normal teaching that week so you can catch up, revise, and get on top of coursework. It is not a holiday, but it is a breather, and it is a good time to deal with anything you have let slide.

Teaching Block 1 covers the autumn, with assessment finishing before Christmas. Teaching Block 2 covers spring, with a preparation week in January, teaching through to early May, then the main exam period. After that the summer is for resits, dissertations, and for most undergraduates, the long break.

University of Bristol Term Dates 2025/26

This is the current year, and these dates are confirmed.

Teaching Block 1 (autumn)

Welcome Week runs from 15 to 19 September 2025, and all taught students are expected to be on campus for it. Teaching starts on 22 September 2025 and runs to 12 December 2025.

The consolidation week falls on 27 to 31 October 2025. The assessment preparation week is 8 to 12 December 2025, and the Teaching Block 1 assessment period is a single week, 15 to 19 December 2025. Anything due for the first block is finished by then.

Winter vacation

The winter vacation runs from 22 December 2025 to 9 January 2026. Because all the autumn assessment is already done, this is a genuine break rather than revision time, which is a real advantage if you are travelling home or working over the holidays.

Teaching Block 2 (spring)

The first week back, 12 to 16 January 2026, is a preparation week rather than full teaching. Teaching proper runs from 19 January to 1 May 2026, with a consolidation week on 23 to 27 February 2026.

The spring vacation is 23 March to 10 April 2026. After that comes the assessment preparation week from 27 April to 1 May 2026, and the main assessment period from 5 to 22 May 2026. The undergraduate summer vacation starts on 1 June 2026.

Bristol Term Dates 26/27

If you are applying or planning a longer accommodation booking, the 2026/27 dates are already published and follow the same shape, just shifted by about a week.

Welcome Week is 14 to 18 September 2026. Teaching Block 1 runs from 21 September to 11 December 2026, with the assessment period on 14 to 18 December 2026. The winter vacation is 21 December 2026 to 8 January 2027.

Teaching Block 2 runs from 18 January to 30 April 2027, with the spring vacation on 22 March to 9 April 2027 and the main assessment period from 4 to 21 May 2027. The undergraduate summer vacation starts on 31 May 2027.

Because the structure barely changes year to year, planning around one year gives you a reliable feel for the next.

Winter Vacation and University Closure

As with most universities, the teaching vacation and the actual building closure are two separate things, and mixing them up is an easy mistake.

For 2025, the University closure runs across the bank holidays and closure days from 24 December 2025 to 2 January 2026, with services reopening on Monday 5 January 2026. The winter vacation around it is longer, from 22 December to 9 January. So even when you are off teaching, the campus itself is only fully shut for part of that window.

The spring closure in 2026 covers 3 to 7 April. If you need anything from a staffed service, sort it before these closure dates rather than during them.

Exam and Assessment Periods

This is where Bristol differs from a lot of its rivals. The Teaching Block 1 assessment period is one week in December, finishing before the winter break. The bigger assessment period sits at the end of Teaching Block 2, from 5 to 22 May 2026, and that is where most summer exams and major deadlines fall.

There is also a reassessment period from 21 to 31 July 2026 for resits and deferred exams, with the standard coursework resit deadline on 21 July 2026. For taught postgraduates, the dissertation deadline is 4 September 2026, which the University sets at the end of the 51st week after Welcome Week.

Not every course follows this pattern. Health sciences, social work, PGCE and the International Foundation Programme run to their own schedules, so check directly with your school if you are on one of those.

How to View Your Programme Timetable

Term dates are the frame. Your actual classes, rooms and exam slots come from your personal timetable, which is separate.

At Bristol you can view programme timetables through the University's online timetabling system once you have registered on your course. Your personal timetable usually appears after registration is complete, and it can take a few days to populate, so do not panic if it is empty on day one. Exam timetables are released separately during the year and can vary by department and module. Treat the published term dates as your planning skeleton and your personal timetable as the detail that hangs off it.

Planning Accommodation and Travel Around Term Dates

This is the part that actually costs money if you get it wrong.

Match your contract to the dates you need, not the dates you think you need. Many student tenancies run for 44, 48 or 51 weeks. If you are an undergraduate finishing in late May, a 51-week contract means paying for weeks of empty summer. If you are a postgraduate with a September dissertation deadline, you may need that longer term. Work out your real end date first, then choose the contract.

Book travel around assessment, not the last lecture. The end of TB2 assessment in late May and the start of the summer break are peak travel times, and prices climb quickly. Bristol Temple Meads gives you fast trains to London, Cardiff and the south west, so plan early and you will pay less.

Arrive before Welcome Week. The few days before mid-September are the busiest for move-ins, deliveries and that first big shop. Sorting a delivery slot or airport transfer ahead of time makes the first day far smoother.

Notes for International Students

A few things matter more if you are travelling from outside the UK.

Your visa start date, accommodation start date and Welcome Week will not line up automatically, so check all three before booking flights. Arriving a few days before Welcome Week gives you time to register, collect keys and recover from the journey.

The breaks are also worth using. Bristol sits close to the coast, the Cotswolds and cities like Bath and Cardiff, which makes the winter and spring vacations good windows for travel if you are not flying home. For anything visa-related, get it done before the December closure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bristol have January exams?

Not for standard programmes. Bristol finishes all Teaching Block 1 assessments in the week of 15 to 19 December 2025, before the winter break, so most undergraduates return in January for teaching rather than exams.

Welcome Week is 14 to 18 September 2026. Teaching Block 1 runs 21 September to 11 December 2026, and Teaching Block 2 runs 18 January to 30 April 2027, with the main exams from 4 to 21 May 2027.

You can access your personal timetable through the University's online timetabling system once you have registered on your course. It can take a few days after registration to appear.

When does the Bristol academic year end?

The undergraduate summer vacation starts on 1 June 2026 for the current year, after the main assessment period that ends on 22 May 2026.

Final Thoughts

Bristol's calendar makes more sense once you see the two-block shape behind it: teach, consolidate, assess, repeat, then a long summer. The standout feature is that the autumn assessment finishes before Christmas, so the winter break is genuinely yours.

The dates worth noting now are the end of TB2 assessment on 22 May 2026, the start of the summer vacation on 1 June, and the December closure from 24 December to 2 January, which is the one that quietly catches people out. Plan your room and your travel around those and the year runs a lot more smoothly.
