About Coventry
Coventry is a city of about 370,000 in the West Midlands, roughly equidistant from Birmingham and Leicester. It was largely rebuilt after the Second World War, which gives it a different feel from the preserved medieval centers of nearby cities—more open, more functional, with large modern public spaces and a cathedral that's one of the most striking postwar buildings in England.
The two universities between them bring in around 52,000 students, making Coventry one of the more student-dense cities in the UK relative to its size. That shows in the price of a pint, the number of late-night food options, and the fact that the city has built a lot of purpose-built student accommodation in the past decade.
Birmingham is 20 minutes by train, which opens up a much larger jobs market and entertainment scene. The HS2 development at Birmingham Curzon Street will make that connection even faster.

Why students choose Coventry
- Two strong universities. Coventry University is a large modern university with a strong reputation in engineering, design, and business. The University of Warwick, just outside the city in Canley and Gibbet Hill, is a research-intensive Russell Group institution consistently ranked in the UK top 10. They attract very different student profiles, and the city works for both.
- One of the cheapest student cities in the UK. At an average of £183 a week, Coventry is significantly more affordable than most comparable cities. Students from more expensive places are often surprised how far their budget goes here.
- Strong employment outcomes. The West Midlands has the largest manufacturing and automotive cluster in the UK outside London, and both universities have strong industry ties, particularly in engineering, computing, and business. Graduate employment rates at both are good.
- A genuinely mixed city. Coventry's population is around 34% non-white British, and it has large South Asian, Eastern European, and Black communities. It was the UK City of Culture in 2021, which brought investment and events infrastructure that's lasted. It's a comfortable, diverse place to live.
- Part-time work is accessible. Coventry has a large retail, logistics, and healthcare sector. Student jobs are plentiful, and many properties are well positioned for commuting to Birmingham for additional opportunities.
Find student accommodation in Coventry by area
City Centre
Coventry University's main campus is right in the city centre, which makes central accommodation the most popular choice for its students. You're within walking distance of the Priory Street buildings, the library, the Students' Union, and most of the shops and nightlife. Expect to pay slightly above the city average for the proximity.
Earlsdon
The most popular area for students from both universities, and for good reason. It's a residential suburb south-west of the centre with independent shops, cafes, and a strong community feel. Rents tend to be lower than central, and it's about 15 minutes on foot or a few minutes by bus to both campuses.
Canley
The go-to area for University of Warwick students. Canley sits directly adjacent to the Warwick campus and has a well-established student house market. If you're at Warwick and want to walk to campus, this is where to look. Generally affordable and practical, if not the most exciting neighbourhood.
Hillfields and Stoke
East of the city centre, these areas offer some of the cheapest rents in Coventry. Hillfields in particular is a short walk from Coventry University. The housing stock is older, but the value is real. Popular with students who prioritise budget over aesthetics.
Title Hill
Further west, popular with Warwick students who want more space for less money. Bus connections to campus are regular, and it's quieter than the central areas. Good option for second and third years who prefer a house over a flat.
Accommodation in Coventry for international students
Coventry is used to international students. At both universities, international enrolment is high, Coventry University in particular has significant numbers from South Asia and the Middle East, and the city has the infrastructure to match.
Practical notes for students arriving from abroad:
- Acolyte lets you book a verified, furnished room before you land. No need to scramble on arrival.
- Most purpose-built student accommodation in Coventry includes bills, important when UK energy costs are unpredictable.
- Both universities have strong international student offices that handle visa compliance letters, NHS registration guidance, and emergency support.
- City centre and Earlsdon are both well-lit, walkable areas with good transport. Coventry has a low crime rate for a city of its size.
