The honest bit: Canada is expensive right now.

Vancouver and Toronto are among the most expensive cities in the world for rent. A studio in Vancouver can hit CAD $2,500+/month. The play is to go to Calgary, Ottawa, Halifax, Winnipeg, or a strong provincial university city — same high-quality education, significantly lower rent. Outside the major coastal cities, CAD $1,000–$1,500/month gets you a decent shared place. Budget before you apply.
