"Collateral free" is the most searched phrase in Indian education lending and the most misread. It does not mean nobody is on the hook. It means no property is pledged. The lender still needs a co-applicant with income, a credit score that holds up, and a course it believes will produce a salary.

Here is what is genuinely available, what it costs, and where the marketing stops matching the sanction letter.

The three routes to an unsecured abroad loan

1. Public sector banks, small ticket. SBI, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank and Union Bank all lend without collateral, but the unsecured slab for foreign study is modest. Above it, tangible security is mandatory. For a ₹45 lakh master's in the US, a public sector bank will fund a fraction of your need unsecured and expect property for the rest. The Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans backs part of this, and it is aimed primarily at study within India.

2. NBFCs. This is where most large unsecured abroad loans in India are written. HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, InCred and similar lenders sanction well into the tens of lakhs without security, decide in days rather than weeks, and lend against a wider list of universities. You pay for that in rate, typically two to five percentage points above a secured public sector loan, and in a processing fee that is a real percentage of a large number.

3. International lenders. Providers such as MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance underwrite on your future earning potential rather than on an Indian co-signer or Indian collateral. That is the only genuinely no-co-applicant route. It is restricted to specific universities and courses, priced in dollars, and the currency risk sits with you for the life of the loan. If your parents cannot serve as co-applicants, this route exists. If they can, it is usually more expensive.

What "collateral free" leaves out

Read these five clauses before you celebrate a sanction.

A co-applicant is still mandatory with every Indian lender. Their income, credit score and existing EMIs are the underwriting.

Rate resets. Many NBFC unsecured loans carry a rate the lender may revise. Ask whether the rate is fixed for the tenure, floating against a published benchmark, or reset at the lender's discretion. The third is the one that hurts.

Margin money. Even an unsecured loan usually requires you to fund a percentage of the total cost yourself. That contribution is real cash you need before disbursement.

Lower living expense caps. Unsecured sanctions often fund tuition generously and living costs thinly. Price your actual rent first. Our UK student accommodation cost guide and living expenses in the UK for international students are more reliable than the university estimate the lender may be working from.

Insurance bundling. Some lenders attach a loan protection policy and add the premium to the principal. It is often optional. Ask.

Approval: what actually moves the decision

Ranked by how much weight lenders put on each factor for an unsecured file:

  1. Co-applicant credit score and income. A score above 750 with a comfortable obligation ratio is the strongest single signal. Below 700 and you are into higher pricing or refusal.
  2. University tier and country. A named university in the US, UK, Canada, Germany or Australia moves faster and cheaper than an unranked institution.
  3. Course employability. STEM, analytics, health and management get funded. Short diplomas and unaccredited programmes struggle.
  4. Your academic record. Consistency matters more than brilliance. Unexplained gaps invite questions.
  5. Loan-to-cost ratio. Asking for the full cost with no margin contribution weakens an unsecured file.

How to strengthen a file with no property

  • Fix the credit report first. Pull your co-applicant's report, dispute errors, and close or reduce small revolving balances. Allow six weeks.
  • Add a second co-applicant. Many lenders allow two, and combined income lifts the eligible amount.
  • Contribute margin visibly. Showing 10 to 15 percent from savings changes how the file reads.
  • Use a fixed deposit as partial security. This is a hybrid, not a full secured loan, and it often buys a meaningful rate concession without touching property.
  • Apply in parallel. One public sector bank, one private bank, one NBFC. A competing sanction is the only real negotiating position you will have.

What it costs, honestly

An unsecured abroad loan is priced above a secured one, and the gap is wider than most students expect once fees are included. Compare on total outgo, not the headline rate: interest, processing fee, moratorium interest treatment, prepayment terms and the forex margin on each transfer. The mechanics of that comparison are laid out in abroad education loan interest rates in India.

Two levers reduce the cost materially. Servicing simple interest during the moratorium usually earns a rate concession and stops interest capitalising into your principal. And under Section 80E, the entire interest paid is deductible for eight years by whoever repays, which matters most on exactly these high-rate unsecured loans, provided the repayer is in the old tax regime.

One more: remittances funded by an education loan from a specified financial institution attract no TCS, while self-funded remittances above the annual threshold do. Routing fees through the loan rather than from savings is a genuine saving, and it is often overlooked.

PM Vidyalaxmi does not cover study abroad

This needs saying plainly because the search results blur it. PM Vidyalaxmi offers collateral-free, guarantor-free loans with a credit guarantee and interest subvention for students at qualifying Indian institutions ranked in NIRF. It is a domestic scheme. It will not fund a master's in Toronto or Munich. The Vidya Lakshmi portal, a separate thing with a similar name, is just a common application window to multiple banks and does not set your rate or your security requirement.

A workable sequence

  1. Decide, honestly, whether any acceptable collateral exists in the family. That answer sets your entire shortlist.
  2. Pull credit reports for every possible co-applicant.
  3. Shortlist two NBFCs and one bank, matched to your university and country.
  4. Apply in parallel once you have an admission letter.
  5. Compare total cost, disbursement schedule and rate-reset language, then negotiate with the competing sanction in hand.
  6. Match the disbursement dates against your tuition deadline and your accommodation deposit date before you sign.

That last step causes the most avoidable stress. Deposits usually fall outside the disbursement schedule, so if you are booking through Acolyte Living's verified listings, check the deposit due date early. In Canada in particular, booking accommodation without a guarantor has its own workarounds worth knowing before you arrive.

FAQs

Can I get an education loan to study abroad without collateral?

Yes. Public sector banks lend limited amounts unsecured for foreign study, NBFCs lend much larger amounts unsecured at higher rates, and a small number of international lenders lend with no Indian co-signer at all.

Which bank gives education loan without collateral for abroad?

All the major public sector banks do, within their unsecured slab. Beyond that slab they require security. For large unsecured sanctions, NBFCs are the practical answer. A lender-by-lender comparison is in the best bank for education loan for abroad.

Do I need a co-applicant for a non-collateral loan?

With Indian lenders, yes. Only international lenders underwriting on future earnings skip it.

What credit score does my co-applicant need?

Aim for 750 and above for clean approval and good pricing. Between 700 and 750 is workable at a higher rate. Below 700, expect friction.

Is an unsecured loan risky for my parents?

It is still a legal obligation on the co-applicant. No property is pledged, but a default affects their credit and can be pursued. Treat the EMI as a shared commitment, not a formality.
