The FAU acceptance rate is 66.12%. Florida Atlantic University received 31,511 applications, admitted 20,838 students and enrolled 4,232 of them.

That makes FAU the most accessible of Florida's major public universities by a wide margin. The University of Florida admits 19%, Florida A&M 20.6% and UCF 33%. At two thirds admitted, FAU is a genuine safety school for most Florida applicants with a reasonable record.

The difficulty at FAU is not getting in. It is affording where it is.

What FAU Actually Requires

The test ranges above sit well below Florida's more selective publics, and the GPA distribution is the more informative number. 57% of enrolled students had a GPA of 3.75 or higher, and fewer than 1% were below 2.49.

That combination tells you something specific about how FAU admits. It is not indifferent to academic record, and a weak GPA is still a problem. But it weighs a solid GPA heavily and does not require the test scores that UF or FSU effectively do. An applicant with a 3.8 GPA and a 1100 SAT is a comfortable FAU admit and a long shot at UF.

For a Florida resident with Bright Futures, that matters more than it looks. Bright Futures has its own GPA and test thresholds, and qualifying for the scholarship is a separate exercise from qualifying for FAU. The colleges in Florida guide sets out what each Bright Futures award covers.

The 20% Yield

FAU admitted 20,838 students and enrolled 4,232. That is a yield of about 20%, meaning four out of five admitted students went somewhere else.

A low yield at a high acceptance rate is a recognizable pattern: FAU functions as a safety school for a large number of applicants who are aiming higher. Compare it across the state:

UniversityAcceptance rateYield
University of Florida19%43%
Florida A&M20.6%Not published here
UCF33%About 28%
FAU66.12%About 20%

Two practical consequences. An FAU offer is not scarce, so compare it properly against everything else you hold, particularly on housing cost. And FAU's own enrollment planning assumes most admits will decline, which is why the acceptance rate stays high even as applications grow.

Boca Raton Is the Expensive Part

Here is the fact that should change how you evaluate an FAU offer.

Boca Raton has the highest average rent of any major student city in Florida. Higher than Miami.

CityAverage rent3 bedroomPer bedroom
Boca Raton$2,965$4,170$1,390
Miami$2,773$3,741$1,247
Tampa$2,031$2,655$885
Orlando$1,828$2,381$794
Gainesville$1,867$1,990$663
Tallahassee$1,787$1,916$639

Sharing a three-bedroom in Boca Raton costs $1,390 a month per person. The same arrangement in Tallahassee costs $639. Over a four-year degree that gap is about $36,048.

Now set that against tuition. Florida's average in-state tuition and fees are $6,360 a year, and Bright Futures may cover all of it. The housing difference between FAU and FSU is worth more than five years of Florida tuition. For a Florida resident on a full Bright Futures award, the choice between Boca Raton and Tallahassee is very close to the entire financial decision.

This is not an argument against FAU. It is an argument for costing it properly, which almost no applicant does, because the acceptance rate makes the decision feel easy.

How to Make FAU Affordable

If FAU is the right academic fit, three moves genuinely change the number.

  • Share, and share bigger. The per-bedroom gap between a Boca Raton studio at $1,959 and a room in a three-bed at $1,390 is $569 a month. That is $6,828 a year for accepting a shared kitchen.
  • Look at FAU's other campuses. FAU operates beyond Boca Raton, including in Jupiter, Davie and Fort Lauderdale. If your program runs at one of them, the housing market you are renting in is a different and usually cheaper one. Confirm with your department which campus your courses are actually taught at before you sign anything in Boca Raton.
  • Check the lease term against the academic year. Florida leases commonly run twelve months. Paying three months of Boca Raton rent for an empty room is roughly $4,170 on a three-bed share. Read what subletting means before signing.

FAU guarantees housing for first years. Our comparison of college dorms versus off-campus housing is worth reading before you decide, because Boca Raton is one of the Florida cities where campus housing competes well on price. How to book on-campus housing at US universities covers the process.

Take our apartment tour checklist to viewings. International students should read renting without a credit history in the USA and co-signing student leases in the USA early.

FAU Compared to Other Florida Options

If FAU is on your list, these are the realistic alternatives and what each changes:

Instead of FAUAcceptance ratePer bedroom, 3 bedGuide
UCF, Orlando33%$794UCF acceptance rate
FAMU, Tallahassee20.6%$639FAMU acceptance rate
University of Florida, Gainesville19%$663UF acceptance rate
University of Tampa, TampaAbout 40%$885University of Tampa tuition

Every one of those is harder to get into than FAU and cheaper to live near. That is the trade-off in plain terms.

Who FAU Suits

A strong fit if you have a solid GPA but test scores that do not clear UF or FSU, you want to stay in South Florida for family or work reasons, you already have housing in the area, or your program runs at one of FAU's cheaper campuses.

Think carefully if you are treating FAU as the affordable option without having priced Boca Raton. On tuition it is identical to every other Florida public. On housing it is the most expensive choice in the state.

The Bottom Line

The FAU acceptance rate of 66.12% makes Florida Atlantic the easiest major public university to get into in Florida, and the data behind it is consistent: a solid GPA carries you, test scores matter less, and four out of five admits go elsewhere.

The number that deserves your attention is not on your admissions letter. Boca Raton rent runs $1,390 per bedroom in a three-bed share against $639 in Tallahassee, and across four years that is about $36,048. In a state where tuition is the lowest in the country and frozen, that is the decision that actually costs money.
