Most UK universities ask for IELTS 6.0 to 6.5 overall for undergraduate courses and 6.5 to 7.0 for master's, with no individual band below 5.5 or 6.0. The UK Home Office sets a separate and lower bar: CEFR B2, which is IELTS 5.5 in every skill, for any course at degree level. You have to satisfy both, and they are not the same requirement.

That second sentence is where most students lose money. They book the wrong test, or they book two tests when one would have done, or they take the Duolingo English Test and then discover in July that their visa file has a hole in it.

Two things to take from that table.

The university requirement is almost always higher than the visa requirement. If you meet your offer condition, you have usually cleared the Home Office bar without thinking about it. The exception is a lopsided score: 6.5 overall with 5.0 in writing meets no one's requirement, because both the university and the Home Office look at individual bands, not just the total.

Below degree level, the rules tighten rather than relax. For a foundation year or a pre-sessional English course, the Home Office requires B1 evidenced through a Secure English Language Test specifically. Your university cannot assess you itself at that level. More on why that matters in the next section.

Bottom line: target 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each band if you are applying for a master's, and 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each band for undergraduate. That range covers the majority of UK offers.

The part most guides get wrong: two requirements, not one

There are two separate English checks in a UK application, and they are set by different people.

The university requirement is an admissions decision. It is written into your offer letter as a condition. Miss it and you do not get an unconditional offer, which means you do not get a CAS, which means you have no visa application.

The Home Office requirement is immigration law. For a course at degree level or above, GOV.UK sets it at CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. For a course below degree level it is B1.

Here is the part that changes what test you should book. For degree-level study, a UK higher education provider with a track record of compliance is allowed to assess your English itself and confirm it on your CAS. You do not automatically need a Secure English Language Test. This is written into Appendix Student of the Immigration Rules, and it is why so many international students at UK universities have never sat an IELTS for UKVI test in their lives.

Queen's University Belfast states it plainly to its own applicants: for degree-level entry, the university chooses how to assess your English level, and you may not need to submit extra evidence with your visa application. For pre-degree or pre-sessional study, the same page says the assessment must have been done through a SELT, and a missing certificate means refusal.

So the honest answer to "do I need IELTS for UKVI" is: it depends on your course level and your university's policy, and you find out by asking your admissions team which route they use. Not by reading a list.

When you definitely need a SELT

• Your course is below degree level, including foundation years and standalone pre-sessional English
• Your university tells you it does not self-assess and requires a UKVI-approved test
• You are applying through a provider that is not a higher education provider with track record status
• You are switching to a work route later where the SELT rules are different

When your university's own assessment is usually enough

• A bachelor's, master's or PhD at a mainstream UK university
• Your offer letter accepts a test the university trusts, which may include Duolingo, TOEFL iBT, standard IELTS Academic, or an English-medium degree from your home country

IELTS scores at real UK universities

Requirements move by course, so treat these as bands rather than promises and check the course page before you book anything.

A few patterns worth knowing.

Business and management courses at competitive universities often ask for 6.5 with 6.0 in writing specifically, because the assessment load is essay-heavy. Engineering and computing sometimes accept 6.0 overall at the same institution. Law, journalism, social work, nursing and teacher training sit at 7.0 or higher almost everywhere, partly for professional registration reasons.

If your score sits half a band under, do not assume rejection. Most UK universities run pre-sessional English courses of six, ten or twenty weeks that let you enter with a lower score and progress into the main degree. The catch is cost and timing, and pre-sessional entry usually does require a SELT because the pre-sessional itself is below degree level.

IELTS UKVI vs IELTS Academic: what is actually different

Short version: the test is identical. What differs is where you sit it and what the certificate is allowed to do.

The British Council and IDP both confirm the content is the same. People asking whether IELTS UKVI is easier are asking the wrong question. It is not a different exam, it is a different chain of custody.

Which one should you book

If your university self-assesses and you are confident about that, IELTS Academic is fine and slightly cheaper.

If there is any doubt, book IELTS for UKVI (Academic). It is accepted by every UK university for admission and it also works for the visa. For a couple of hundred rupees you remove the risk of having to sit a second test in August with a course start date in September. That is the single most expensive mistake in this whole process, and it is entirely avoidable.

Two traps to avoid:

Booking General Training instead of Academic. IELTS General Training exists for work and migration. It does not meet UK university admission requirements for degree study. The versions are selected at booking and changing later means cancelling and rebooking, which costs you part of the fee.

Booking standard IELTS when your course is a pre-sessional. Below degree level, the Home Office wants a SELT. A standard IELTS certificate will be rejected regardless of the score on it.

Duolingo accepted universities in the UK, and the visa catch

The Duolingo English Test costs around 65 US dollars, takes an hour, runs from your bedroom, and returns a result in about 48 hours. Against IELTS at roughly 19,000 rupees with a test centre booking weeks out, the appeal is obvious.

More than 60 UK universities accept DET for admission, and the list includes serious institutions. Bath, Bristol, Exeter, York, Sussex and Brunel have all accepted it, and acceptance has been reported at Imperial and LSE for certain programmes. Duolingo publishes its own partner directory, which is the only list worth trusting because university policies change between intake years.

Typical DET scores for UK entry

Many universities also set subscore minimums in literacy, comprehension, conversation and production. A 120 overall with a 95 in production can still fail the condition.

Now the part that catches people

The Duolingo English Test is not on the Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests. It was not on it in early 2026 and it is not on it now.

That does not automatically mean DET is useless for a UK visa. It means DET only works when your university is a higher education provider with track record status, your course is at degree level, and the university is willing to accept DET as its own internal assessment and say so on your CAS. When those three things line up, students go from DET to CAS to visa without ever sitting a SELT. Thousands do it every year.

When they do not line up, you need a SELT and DET will not substitute for one.

How to check your own situation in ten minutes

1. Open the admissions page for your specific course, not the university's general English requirements page. Policies differ by department and by level.
2. Confirm DET is listed for your course and note the exact score and any subscore minimums.
3. Email the international admissions team one question: "If I meet your English requirement with the Duolingo English Test, will my CAS confirm that you have assessed my English, or will I need a UKVI-approved SELT for the visa?"
4. Save the reply. That email is the only thing that matters if your visa file is queried.
5. If the answer is that you need a SELT, book IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI immediately.

PTE vs IELTS: which is easier

Neither test is objectively easier. They are easier for different people, and the honest way to decide is to sit one free practice test of each and compare.

That said, the differences are predictable enough that you can usually guess which will suit you.
