Kent State tuition for 2026-27 is $13,848.40 a year for Ohio residents and $24,298 for everyone else, on the Kent campus at 12 to 18 credit hours.
Both numbers are the lowest of Ohio's three main public universities, and the out-of-state figure is the one that should stop you. Ohio State charges non-residents $44,271 for a public degree from the same state system. Kent State charges $19,973 less, every year.

Out of State, Kent State Tuition Is the Cheapest Ohio Degree by a Wide Margin
| * | Ohio resident | Out of state |
| Kent State | $13,848 | $24,298 |
| Ohio State | $14,050 | $44,271 |
| Ohio University, Athens | $14,802 | $26,576 |
For an Ohio resident the three are within $954 of each other, which is close to a rounding error across a four-year degree. Kent State is cheapest, but not decisively.
For a non-resident the picture is completely different. Kent State at $24,298 undercuts Ohio State by $19,973 a year, or $79,892 over four years. It also undercuts Ohio University Athens by $2,278.
Against other states, $24,298 is genuinely low for an out-of-state public rate. Penn State charges $44,574, Virginia Tech $40,180 and Ohio State $44,271. Only Florida's publics, at roughly $17,725 to $24,076, come in at a comparable level, and Florida is the cheapest state system in the country.
Rule of thumb: if you want an Ohio public degree and you are not from Ohio, start at Kent State and make the other universities justify their premium.
The Golden Guarantee Locks Room and Board, Not Just Tuition
Kent State's cohort guarantee is called the Golden Guarantee, and it is more comprehensive than the word tuition suggests.
For eligible students it holds three things flat for the duration of the cohort:
- Ohio resident undergraduate tuition, meaning the instructional and general fee
- The career services fee
- The room and board plan charges
That third item is the valuable one and it is easy to skim past. Across our five state clusters, housing has repeatedly turned out to be the larger half of a resident's bill: Ohio State estimates $15,738 for housing and food against $14,050 in tuition, and James Madison in Virginia charges $15,220 against $14,768. A guarantee that fixes only tuition leaves the bigger number floating.
The Golden Guarantee applies to new first-year degree-seeking undergraduates and eligible transfer students enrolling from Fall 2019 onward, and students are locked into a particular cohort for their enrolment period.
As with every Ohio guarantee, it is cohort-based. Your entry year sets the rate, a later cohort pays more, and a deferral moves you into the more expensive one. Our colleges in Ohio guide compares what each of the three state guarantees actually covers, because they differ in exactly this way.

Kent Is a Small Town, and the Rent Has One Quirk Worth Money
Kent is a town of roughly 28,000 people in northeast Ohio, and the rental market behaves like a college town's.
Average rent is $1,494 a month. A studio runs $1,098, a one-bedroom $1,071, a two-bedroom $1,534 and a three-bedroom $2,013. Sharing the three-bed works out at about $671 per person, or $8,052 over a twelve-month lease.
Look again at the first two of those figures. A one-bedroom averages $1,071 and a studio averages $1,098. The larger unit is $27 a month cheaper. We found the same inversion in Athens, Blacksburg and Harrisonburg, and it catches out students who assume a studio must be the budget option because it is smaller. If you are renting alone in Kent, ask for the one-bedroom and do not look at studios.
Average rent in Kent also fell 0.56% over the past year, from $1,502. It is one of only a handful of markets in our data moving in the right direction.
Within Ohio, Kent at $671 per bedroom sits third of four, behind Columbus at $563 and Cincinnati at $665 and marginally ahead of Athens at $676. Across all five states we have measured, it is still in the cheaper half.

The Trade-Off Kent State Asks You to Accept
Being honest about this matters more than the price comparison, because the price comparison is so favourable that it invites you to skip the rest.
Kent State is in a small town. Columbus has 900,000 people and a large graduate employment market on the doorstep; Kent has 28,000 and relies on Cleveland and Akron, both a drive away, for internships and part-time work at scale. If your plan depends on term-time employment in a particular industry, that is a real constraint and the $19,973 saving does not remove it.
Kent State is also less selective and less research-intensive than Ohio State. For most undergraduate degrees that difference is smaller than rankings imply, but for a student aiming at research experience or a specific graduate pipeline it can matter.
Rule of thumb: the $79,892 four-year saving is real, and so is the smaller town. Decide which one your plan actually depends on.
How to Decide
- Establish your residency. In-state, the three Ohio publics are within $954 and you should choose on fit. Out of state, Kent State is $79,892 cheaper than Ohio State over four years and the burden of proof sits with the others.
- Confirm what your Golden Guarantee cohort covers, especially the room and board element, which is the part that distinguishes it.
- Check the regional campus option. Kent State's regional campuses charge different rates from the Kent campus, and Ohio University's regional rate of $6,604 for residents is the cheapest route in the state.
- Price a shared three-bed against the guaranteed room and board. At $671 a room, $8,052 over twelve months, the off-campus option is cheaper on rent but trades away the locked rate. That certainty has value.
- Be realistic about the town. Visit if you can, and test the internship question against your actual plan rather than against a general impression.
Take our apartment tour checklist to viewings and read what subletting means before signing a twelve-month lease against a nine-month academic year. Weigh the options with college dorms versus off-campus housing and how to book on-campus housing at US universities. International students should read renting without a credit history in the USA and co-signing student leases in the USA early.

Who Kent State Suits
It suits out-of-state students more strongly than any other option in this cluster. $24,298 with a cohort lock that includes room and board is the best value out-of-state proposition in Ohio, and it is not close.
It suits families who want the most comprehensive guarantee available in the state, since the room and board element covers the line that usually floats.
It suits students who want a walkable college town and are not depending on a large city employment market during term time.
It suits you least well if you need a metropolitan internship market within walking distance, or if you want the research scale and graduate pipeline of a flagship. Those are the things you are trading for the saving, and they are worth naming rather than discovering in second year.

The Honest Answer
If you are from outside Ohio and you want an Ohio public degree, this is the page that saves you the most money of anything in this cluster. Kent State charges $24,298 where Ohio State charges $44,271, and it locks your room and board as well as your tuition. Over four years that is close to $80,000.
What you give up is a city. Kent has 28,000 people, and if your plan needs a metropolitan internship market within reach during term time, that is the thing to weigh, not the tuition. For most undergraduates it is a trade worth making. Make it deliberately.
