What College Has the Lowest Graduation Rate?

Graduation rates are one of the most useful, and most ignored, statistics when choosing a university. A low graduation rate means a significant share of enrolled students never finish their degree. That's a serious consideration before you commit four years and tens of thousands of pounds or dollars.

What does graduation rate mean?

A graduation rate measures the percentage of first-time, full-time students who complete their degree within a set time frame (usually 6 years in the US, 3 to 4 years in the UK). A rate of 40% means 6 out of 10 enrolled students don't graduate on time, or at all.

Low graduation rates can reflect poor student support, financial pressure on students, selective admissions followed by high dropout pressure, or simply a mismatch between student preparation and course demands.

What college has the lowest graduation rate in the USA?

Among nationally accredited four-year institutions, several for-profit universities have historically reported the lowest graduation rates. Based on recent National Center for Education Statistics data:

UniversityGraduation Rate (6-year)Type
Some for-profit institutionsBelow 15%For-profit
University of Phoenix~13 to 15%For-profit, online
Strayer University~25%For-profit
American InterContinental University~30%For-profit
Grand Canyon University~43%For-profit

Public and non-profit universities generally perform much better. The national average for four-year institutions sits at around 63% (6-year rate). Highly selective universities like MIT, Harvard, and Duke are above 95%.

For-profit institutions dominate the lowest end of the scale. They often admit students without strong academic preparation and provide limited in-person support.

What is the lowest ranked university in the USA?

"Lowest ranked" depends on the ranking system used. In broad terms, the bottom of most US college rankings tends to include smaller regional institutions and some for-profit schools. No single university holds a permanent "worst" position because rankings shift annually and methodology varies widely.

What's more useful than a single "worst" label: avoid universities with graduation rates below 30%, poor employment outcomes, and active regulatory scrutiny from the Department of Education. Those are the real red flags.

What is the lowest ranked university in the UK?

UK university rankings are more compressed than US ones. The gap between 50th and 130th is narrower than in America. The bottom of tables like the Guardian University Guide and Complete University Guide tends to include smaller specialist colleges and newer universities.

Universities that regularly appear at the lower end of UK national rankings include some newer post-1992 institutions. However, low ranking doesn't mean a bad degree. A focused nursing course at a lower-ranked university with 95% employment outcomes may serve a student far better than a higher-ranked general degree with weaker job prospects.

Should graduation rate affect your university choice?

Yes, more than most people realise. A high graduation rate tells you that students who start there tend to finish, which means the university supports its students well. A low rate is a warning sign worth investigating.

Before applying to any university, check:

  1. The graduation/completion rate for your specific course, not just the institution
  2. Graduate employment outcomes (what do graduates do, and are they employed in their field?)
  3. Student satisfaction scores
  4. Student-to-staff ratios

These four numbers together tell you far more than a single ranking position.

Conclusion

In the US, the lowest graduation rates (sometimes below 15 to 20%) tend to be at for-profit online universities like University of Phoenix. In the UK, rates are generally higher across the board, but completion rates still vary. Always check course-level outcomes rather than relying on institutional averages alone.
