Bournemouth's nightlife concentrates in three walkable areas: the town centre around Exeter Road, Poole Hill and the Triangle, plus Lansdowne near the university's campus and the train station. Almost everything is within walking distance of everything else, which means you can move between bars and clubs without spending anything on taxis.
That walkability is the single best thing about a night out here, and it is why Bournemouth punches above its size.

Town centre is the heart of it. Bars, clubs, pubs and late-night venues cluster tightly, and most student nights happen around here. The proximity means the standard evening is drinks at a pub or cocktail bar, then on to a club, then takeaway, all on foot.
Lansdowne sits near Bournemouth University's Lansdowne Campus and the main train station. It is the more affordable end and where a lot of student nights land.
The Triangle has its own character and is well established as the centre of Bournemouth's LGBTQ+ scene.
Beyond the centre, the coastal villages each have their own flavour. Boscombe is the bohemian one, with open mic nights, acoustic sets and DJ sessions appealing to local artists and emerging talent. Southbourne and Westbourne are quieter.
The clubs
Cameo is the largest nightclub in Bournemouth and the one most people mean when they say they are going out. Big rooms, mainstream music, the default for a large group.
The Old Fire Station, universally known as TOFS, is the student institution. It is a live music venue and nightclub in Lansdowne, a couple of minutes from the halls of residence, and it has long been the home of Students' Union nights. On Fridays the SU takes over to host Lollipop, which a lot of students will tell you is the best club night in town: two floors, mainstream and throwbacks, and drinks at genuinely student prices.
If you are a Bournemouth student and you only learn one venue name, learn this one.
The Vault is the most unusual of them. Set inside a former bank, it is small, intimate and open at weekends until 5am. Good staff, food available, and a different atmosphere from the big rooms.
Sound Circus is Bournemouth's alternative and rock club, and a live venue. Loud music, drinks specials, and popular with students who do not want chart music.
Eden Garden Bar & Club combines a garden bar, an alfresco café and a live music club, which makes it a good option earlier in the evening as well as later.
There is also a club in town styled as an Egyptian cave, open Wednesday to Saturday, if you want somewhere with a bit more theatre to it.
The bars worth starting at
Most Bournemouth nights begin somewhere cheaper than the club.
Be At One is the student-friendly cocktail bar in the middle of town. Cocktails at £6 all day, every day for students, and two-for-one during happy hour. Staff have a reputation for a heavy pour.
O'Neills, at the top of town, runs pints and cocktails from £3.50 at selected times Monday to Friday, plus 20% off mains Monday to Friday.
The George Tapps sits near O'Neills with student discounts, a pub garden, live sport and karaoke on Sundays.
For a proper pre-drinks, Bournemouth has two well-used Wetherspoons. The Mary Shelley, named after the author, sits just before the town centre overlooking a church, and runs a small disco at the end of the week. The Moon in the Square is the more traditional pub option.
Student nights through the week
Student nights move around and get rebranded, so treat these as the shape of the week rather than a fixed timetable.
Mondays have a long-running house party themed student night, designed to recreate a house party inside a club with sofas, lamps and throwback music. It is one of the more distinctive nights in town and a common way to start the week.
Fridays are Lollipop at TOFS, run by the Students' Union.
Weekends are the general nights, busier with non-students and visitors, particularly stag and hen groups. If you want a student-heavy crowd, midweek is better.
Check the venue's own events calendar or the Students' Union listings before you commit to a specific night. Promoters change and so do nights.

That last point is the real saving. In most student cities, taxis are a fixed cost of every night out. In Bournemouth town centre they usually are not.
Practical advice
Book student night tickets in advance. Door prices at the popular nights are materially higher, and the big ones sell out.
Bring ID even if you look 30. Bournemouth is a heavy stag and hen destination and door staff are strict.
The seafront is not the nightlife. Visitors assume the beach is where the clubs are. The clubs are in town, up the hill. The beach is for the daytime and the walk home.
Check what is on before you go out. A venue that is unmissable on a Friday can be empty on a Tuesday.
