Ohio State Acceptance Rate: 60.5%, and Four in Five Say No

Two numbers describe Ohio State, and most applicants only ever see one of them. The Ohio State acceptance rate is 60.5%: the university admitted 44,116 students from 72,829 applications for the Class of 2028.

The second number is the yield, 21%. Of those 44,116 admitted students, roughly four in five went somewhere else.

Taken together, those two figures tell you to treat an Ohio State offer as a starting position rather than a result. It is comparatively easy to obtain and very commonly declined, and both of those facts should change what you do next.

The Ohio State Acceptance Rate Has Moved Enough to Make Old Advice Wrong

If someone told you Ohio State was getting dramatically harder, they were reading one cycle.

Class ofAcceptance rate
202468%
202557%
202653%
202746%
202860.5%

The slide from 68% to 46% was real and it was widely written about. The rebound to 60.5% was not, and applications fell about 5% in that year.

Rule of thumb: for Ohio State, use only the most recent cycle and ignore the trend line. This is not a university on a smooth path to selectivity, and a 46% figure quoted at you is a year out of date and roughly 14 points too pessimistic.

Flagged for review. These are Class of 2028 figures from a third-party analysis. Confirm against Ohio State's own published data before relying on them.

Residency Barely Changes Your Odds Here, Which Is Unusual

This is where Ohio State separates itself from almost every flagship we have looked at.

Admission standards for Ohio residents and out-of-state applicants are broadly comparable. The entering class came out 64% in-state, 27% out-of-state and 9% international, but that reflects who applies rather than a reserved allocation.

Set that against the other state flagships in our guides:

  • The University of Florida admits residents at about 52% and out-of-state applicants at about 14%, with 85% of undergraduates from Florida.
  • The University of Virginia admits Virginians at about 25% and others at about 13%, because roughly two thirds of the class is reserved for residents.
  • Virginia Tech runs it backwards, admitting out-of-state applicants at 58.67% against 47.33% in-state.
  • Penn State sits closest to Ohio State, at 62% in-state and 59% out-of-state.

Ohio State belongs with Penn State in that list: the state line is not the thing standing between you and an offer.

What the state line does change enormously is the bill. Ohio State charges residents $14,050 in tuition and fees and non-residents $44,271, a gap of $30,221. So your residency is worth very little to your application and a great deal to your budget, which is close to the opposite of the usual arrangement. The Ohio State tuition and fees guide works through it.

Rule of thumb: at Ohio State, residency is a pricing question, not an admissions question.

What a 21% Yield Means in Practice

Ohio State admits 44,116 students to enrol roughly 9,000. That is the lowest yield of any university across our five state clusters, below Penn State's 15% only because Penn State is lower still, and well below the University of Florida's 43%.

Three things follow, and they are more useful than the usual advice about essays.

Your offer is not scarce, so compare it properly. A university declined by four fifths of its admits is not conferring a scarce credential. Weigh it against your other offers on cost and fit, not on relief.

Demonstrated interest counts for something. Where a university knows most admitted students will leave, signals that you actually intend to enrol carry weight. This is a cheap edge and most applicants ignore it.

The housing market moves before the enrolment picture settles. Tens of thousands of admitted students look at Columbus housing each cycle and most never arrive. The good purpose-built stock near campus is taken early, by the people who started looking while they were still deciding rather than after. Browse student accommodation near Ohio State and the wider Columbus market.

What Admitted Students Actually Look Like

Test scores for enrolled students ran 1280 to 1430 on the SAT and 26 to 32 on the ACT in the middle 50%. About 61% submitted scores despite Ohio State being test-optional, which is a high submission rate by current standards and suggests scores still carry real weight here.

The class rank data is the more revealing part. 95% of enrolled first-years ranked in the top quarter of their high school class, and 64% in the top tenth.

Read those two things together and the picture is consistent: a 60.5% acceptance rate, but a class drawn overwhelmingly from the top of the cohort. Ohio State is accessible to strong students rather than accessible to everyone, and the distinction matters when you are judging your own chances.

If your rank sits outside the top quarter, the 60.5% figure is probably optimistic for you. If you are inside the top tenth with a 1350, you are a comfortable fit.

Columbus Is the Cheapest Student City We Have Measured

Ohio State's great advantage is not its admissions profile. It is where it sits.

Columbus averages $1,352 a month across all rentals, with a studio at $994, a one-bedroom at $1,213, a two-bedroom at $1,426 and a three-bedroom at $1,690. Sharing that three-bed works out at about $563 per person.

That is the lowest per-bedroom figure of any student city costed across Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Tallahassee was $639, Richmond $718, Charlottesville $901 and Boca Raton $1,390.

Over a twelve-month lease, $563 a month is $6,756. The same arrangement in Boca Raton is $16,680, a difference of $9,924 a year for an equivalent room.

Set it against the university's own estimate too. Ohio State puts housing and food at $15,738 a year, which is more than in-state tuition of $14,050. A room in a Columbus three-bed at $6,756 leaves a large margin for food before the comparison turns, though you have to cost groceries honestly rather than optimistically for the saving to be real.

Flagged for review. Columbus rent is September 2026 market data across all housing, not student-specific rates.

Ohio State guarantees first-year housing. Before the second-year decision read college dorms versus off-campus housing, and how to book on-campus housing at US universities covers the process. Take the apartment tour checklist to viewings, and read what subletting means before signing a twelve-month lease against a nine-month year. International students should sort a guarantor early: see co-signing student leases in the USA and renting without a credit history in the USA.

How to Decide What to Do With an Ohio State Offer

  1. Check your class rank against the 95% figure. Top quarter is close to a requirement in practice, whatever the 60.5% suggests.
  2. Decide whether to submit scores. With 61% submitting and a 1280 to 1430 range, a score at or above 1280 is probably worth sending.
  3. If you are out of state, price Kent State and Ohio University first. They charge non-residents $24,298 and $26,576 against Ohio State's $44,271 for a broadly similar public degree.
  4. Lock your cohort rate. Ohio State's Tuition Guarantee fixes tuition, housing and dining for four years from your entry year, which the colleges in Ohio guide explains across the state.
  5. Start looking at housing while you are still deciding. At a 21% yield the market is crowded with people who will not enrol, and the stock goes to whoever moved first.

Who Ohio State Suits

It suits strong students who want a very large public research university and the programme breadth that comes with 60,000-plus students, particularly Ohio residents, for whom low tuition and the cheapest student rent in our data combine well.

It suits out-of-state applicants who have a specific programme reason for Ohio State and have accepted the $44,271. General prestige is not a sufficient reason at that price, given the acceptance rate.

It suits you less well if your class rank is outside the top quarter, where the headline figure flatters your chances. And it suits you less well if you want a small campus or close faculty contact in your first two years, which a university this size cannot easily promise.

The Honest Answer

If you are an Ohio resident in the top quarter of your class, apply and expect good news. The combination of a 60.5% rate, $14,050 locked for four years and $563 rent is one of the better deals in American public higher education, and the yield figure tells you the university will be pleased you came.

If you are out of state, the question is not whether you can get in. It is whether an admission granted to three applicants in five and declined by four in five is worth $44,271 a year when Kent State will sell you an Ohio public degree for $24,298. Sometimes it is, for a specific programme. Make yourself name the programme.
