Before anything else: Shandong University of Science and Technology is not Shandong University. They are two separate institutions, with separate admissions, separate funding processes and separate reputations, and the names differ only by five words at the end.

If you are not completely certain which one you have been reading about, this page is worth two minutes before you fill in any form. The search data behind it is full of acronym and campus queries, which is what people type when they are not yet sure which institution they mean.

Shandong University of Science and Technology vs Shandong University

Institution code10422Different, confirm on the application form

They are different institutions in different cities. An offer from one is not an offer from the other, and a scholarship nomination to one cannot be transferred.

And the acronym will not settle it

This university is abbreviated SDUST, and you will also see SUST. Neither abbreviation is safe to rely on: SUST in particular denotes universities in other countries entirely, and agent listings use the forms interchangeably.

Use the full name, every time, on every form and in every email. It is nine words and it eliminates an entire category of error.

Qingdao, Tai'an or Jinan: Which Campus Will You Study On?

This is the check that affects your daily life, and the name gives you no help with it.

The main campus is in Qingdao, and has been since 2003. There are also regional campuses in Tai'an and Jinan.

Three cities:

CampusWhat it means practically
QingdaoCoastal city on the Yellow Sea, milder and more humid, higher cost of living, larger international presence
Tai'anSmaller inland city at the foot of Mount Tai, lower costs, much smaller international community
JinanProvincial capital, inland, hot summers and cold winters, large student population across many institutions

Confirm your campus in writing before you accept an offer. Not the university, the campus. Ask which campus delivers your programme, whether any years of it are delivered elsewhere, and where the accommodation offered to you is. Applicants who assume Qingdao because the main campus is in Qingdao sometimes arrive somewhere else.

Doctoral Programmes and Postdoctoral Research Stations

No ranking position appears on this page, because none could be verified from a ranking body's own published page rather than from an aggregator repeating one. Here is more useful evidence instead.

The university runs 16 colleges with approximately 46,000 students, and holds:

  • 3 first-level doctoral degree programmes
  • 24 doctoral disciplines
  • 5 postdoctoral research stations

The last of those is the number worth understanding. Postdoctoral research stations are separately authorised in the Chinese system, and they indicate something a student headcount cannot: that the institution sustains research careers past the doctorate, in specific fields, with the funding and supervision capacity that requires. A university can enrol forty-six thousand students on teaching capacity alone. It cannot host postdoctoral stations on teaching capacity.

For a postgraduate applicant, that combination of doctoral authorisation and postdoctoral capacity in your field is a better signal than any overall position, because it describes what will actually be available to you: supervisors with active programmes, laboratories with continuity, and projects that outlast your enrolment.

Shandong University of Science and Technology ranking: what to check instead

Instead ofCheck
Overall world positionWhether your field is one of the 24 doctoral disciplines
Reputation generallyWhether a postdoctoral station exists in your field
Research strengthYour intended supervisor's recent publications and current projects
OutcomesWhere recent international postgraduates in your college went, asked of the college

Ask the college that last question directly. The quality of the answer tells you a great deal.

Shandong University of Science and Technology Qingdao: the City

Qingdao is worth a paragraph on its own, because for Pakistani applicants it is a genuinely different proposition from the inland Shandong cities.

It is a coastal port city on the Yellow Sea with a significant international commercial presence, a milder and more humid climate than Jinan or Tai'an, and correspondingly higher living costs. For an engineering or science student, the industrial and port economy around it is relevant: internships, site visits and applied projects are easier to come by in a city with that industrial base than in a smaller inland one.

Against that, costs are higher, and a coastal summer is humid in a way that inland Shandong is not. Neither is a reason to choose or avoid the place, but both should be in your budget and your expectations.

Shandong University of Science and Technology Admission

ElementWhat to do
InstitutionConfirm you are applying to this university and not Shandong University
CampusConfirm which campus delivers your programme, in writing
Language of instructionConfirm for every year, including laboratory and seminar work
Entry requirementsFrom the college's own international admissions pages
DeadlinesFrom the university's own pages, with the date you read them
Total costAsk in writing, including accommodation and insurance
HEC equivalenceEnquire directly with HEC, for the exact degree title, and keep the reply

The language question deserves the same weight here as at any Chinese university. Science and engineering programmes exist in both English-taught and Chinese-taught forms, often with near-identical titles, and for a research degree the working language of the laboratory may differ from the official language of the programme. Ask whether lectures, seminars and laboratory supervision are all in the same language, and whether that changes after the first year.

Not on this page: fees, deadlines and stipend amounts. None could be verified from the institution, and an unverified figure on a page a reader plans years around is worse than an acknowledged gap. Take all three from the university's own pages and note the date.

Shandong University of Science and Technology CSC Scholarship

The Chinese Government Scholarship operates identically here to anywhere else in China, because it is a national programme. What differs is the university's internal recommending process and its own internal deadlines, which you should ask the college for directly.

Two points worth carrying over, both of which cost applicants whole cycles:

The agency number is not the university's number. It identifies the body recommending you. For Pakistani applicants on the HEC route it is reported as 5861, which must be confirmed on the HEC and CSC portals before use. The scholarship page in this series covers the agency number properly, along with the Type A and Type B distinction and the reported disqualification risk in applying for the same programme through both.

Name the campus in your application correspondence. With three campuses, a scholarship nomination that does not specify one leaves a detail to be resolved by someone who is not you.

The Bottom Line

Shandong University of Science and Technology is a separate institution from Shandong University, its main campus has been in Qingdao since 2003, and it runs regional campuses in Tai'an and Jinan. Those three facts settle most of the confusion in the search data. On quality, the useful evidence is not a ranking position but the combination of 24 doctoral disciplines and 5 postdoctoral research stations, which tells a postgraduate applicant what supervision and continuity actually exist. Check the institution, check the campus, check the language, then check whether your field is one of the doctoral disciplines.

Use the full name on every form. It is the cheapest error you will ever avoid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shandong University of Science and Technology the same as Shandong University?

No. They are two separate institutions with separate admissions, separate funding processes and separate reputations. Shandong University is a comprehensive university based in Jinan with instruction recorded from 1911 and institution code 10422. Shandong University of Science and Technology was founded in 1951, is science and engineering focused, and has had its main campus in Qingdao since 2003. An offer from one is not an offer from the other, and a scholarship nomination cannot be transferred between them.

Where is Shandong University of Science and Technology Qingdao campus, and are there others?

The main campus has been in Qingdao, a coastal port city on the Yellow Sea, since 2003. There are also regional campuses in Tai'an and Jinan, which are three genuinely different cities with different climates and costs of living. Confirm in writing which campus delivers your programme and where your accommodation is, because applicants sometimes assume Qingdao on the strength of it being the main campus and arrive somewhere else.

What is the Shandong University of Science and Technology ranking?

No position is stated here because none could be verified from a ranking body's own page rather than an aggregator repeating one. The more informative evidence is that the university holds 3 first-level doctoral degree programmes, 24 doctoral disciplines and 5 postdoctoral research stations across 16 colleges with around 46,000 students. For a postgraduate applicant, whether your field appears among those doctoral disciplines matters more than any overall figure.

Why do postdoctoral research stations matter more than a ranking?

Because they describe capacity rather than size. Postdoctoral research stations are separately authorised in the Chinese system, and hosting them means the institution sustains research careers beyond the doctorate in specific fields, with the funding and supervision continuity that requires. A university can enrol tens of thousands of students on teaching capacity alone, but it cannot host postdoctoral stations without genuine research depth. For a research applicant, that is a direct indicator of what will be available to you.

What is the SDUST or SUST abbreviation, and is it reliable?

SDUST is the common abbreviation for Shandong University of Science and Technology, and SUST also appears. Neither is reliable: SUST in particular denotes universities in other countries entirely, and agent listings use the forms interchangeably. Use the full nine-word name on every form and in every email, which removes a whole category of application error at no cost.

How do I get a Shandong University of Science and Technology CSC scholarship?

Through the Chinese Government Scholarship, either Type A with Pakistani nomination reported to run through HEC, or Type B direct to the university as recommending institution. The usual error is assuming the agency number belongs to the university when it identifies the recommending body: for the HEC route it is reported as 5861, to be confirmed on the HEC and CSC portals. With three campuses, also name the campus explicitly in your correspondence so that detail is not resolved by someone else.

What are the Shandong University of Science and Technology admission requirements?

Take them from the college's own international admissions pages, since requirements are set at college level rather than centrally. Before that, settle four things in writing: that you are applying to this institution and not Shandong University, which campus delivers the programme, what the language of instruction is for every year including laboratory and seminar work, and what the total annual cost is including accommodation and insurance. Separately, enquire with HEC about equivalence for the exact degree title.

What does it cost to study there?

No figure appears on this page because none could be verified from the institution, and agent-published fee tables are not an acceptable basis for a multi-year plan. Note that the campus affects this materially: Qingdao has higher living costs than Tai'an or Jinan. Ask the college for total annual cost including tuition, accommodation, insurance and any programme fees, ask whether it rises in later years, and get it in writing.

Is Qingdao a good city for an engineering student?

The industrial and port economy around Qingdao is genuinely relevant to science and engineering study, making internships, site visits and applied projects easier to come by than in a smaller inland city, and the international commercial presence is larger. The trade-offs are higher living costs than inland Shandong and a humid coastal summer. Neither should decide your choice on its own, but both belong in your budget and your expectations.
