UCR Acceptance Rate: 76.4%, and Three Figures That Contradict Each Other

The UCR acceptance rate is 76.4%. UC Riverside admitted 44,343 students from 58,048 applications and enrolled 5,422.

That makes UCR the most accessible campus in the University of California system by a wide margin. It is also a page where the published data contradicts itself in three places, and each contradiction leads applicants to a wrong conclusion. This page resolves them in order.

Contradiction 1: A Test-Free Campus With Published SAT Scores

Here is what the same data source says about UC Riverside:

  • "UC Riverside is test-free. SAT and ACT are not used for admission."
  • 92% of enrolled freshmen submitted SAT scores, with a middle 50% of 1080 to 1280.

Both statements appear together and they cannot both describe how UCR admits students today.

The resolution: the University of California system eliminated SAT and ACT requirements, and then eliminated their use entirely. UC campuses are test-free, not test-optional. Scores play no part in admission decisions.

The 92% submission figure is a historical artefact of how federal reporting works. Institutions report score data to IPEDS, that data persists in databases, and aggregator sites continue to display it alongside current policy without reconciling the two.

What this means for you, concretely: do not spend money or months on SAT preparation for UC Riverside, or for any UC campus. A 1080 to 1280 range published next to UCR's name describes students who took a test that the university did not use. If you see a page telling you what SAT score you need for a UC, that page is wrong.

CSU Long Beach is in the same position, as our Long Beach acceptance rate guide explains. Both of California's public systems are now test-free.

Flagged for review. Keep this section intact. Removing it would leave the page repeating a misleading figure that appears on most competing pages.

Contradiction 2: The UCR Acceptance Rate Sits Beside a 3.84 Average GPA

The second tension is between how easy UCR looks and who actually enrols.

Enrolled first-years averaged a 3.84 GPA, and 34.6% arrived with a 4.0.

A 76.4% acceptance rate normally describes a university admitting most comers. A 3.84 average normally describes a selective one. Both are accurate here, and the explanation is the applicant pool rather than the standard.

UCR received 58,048 applications for a campus that enrolled 5,422 first-years. Those applications come overwhelmingly through the shared UC application, where students apply to multiple campuses at once. So UCR is drawing from the same large, academically strong pool as the rest of the UC system, and admitting a high proportion of it.

The resolution: UCR is accessible rather than unselective. With a test-free process and a 3.84 enrolled average, your transcript is doing essentially all of the work. A GPA in the high 3s makes admission likely. Around 3.4 to 3.6 you are inside the band. Below 3.2 the 76.4% figure flatters you considerably.

The yield reinforces the point. UCR's yield is 12%: 44,343 admitted, 5,422 enrolled. Roughly seven in eight admitted students go elsewhere, usually to another UC. UCR admits broadly because it has to.

Contradiction 3: The UCR CHASS Acceptance Rate Does Not Exist as Published

A meaningful share of searches for this topic ask specifically about CHASS, and that deserves a direct answer.

CHASS is the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, one of UC Riverside's undergraduate colleges alongside the Bourns College of Engineering, the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and the School of Business. At UCR, as at most UC campuses, you apply to a college and a major rather than to the university at large.

So wanting a CHASS-specific acceptance rate is entirely reasonable. The problem is that UCR does not publish one in any of the sources used for this page. The 76.4% figure is campus-wide.

The resolution: treat any CHASS percentage you find as an estimate. Some are careful inferences; many are invented and presented as fact. This is the same situation we documented at Cornell, which publishes university-wide totals only while dozens of pages circulate unlabelled per-college estimates, covered in the Cornell acceptance rate guide.

What you can say with confidence is directional: within any UC campus, engineering and business admit more competitively than humanities and social sciences. CHASS is therefore likely to be less competitive than UCR's 76.4% campus figure, not more. Apply to the college that fits your academic case and ignore the numbers nobody published.

What Is Not Contradictory: Riverside Is Cheap for California

On cost, the data is consistent and it is the strongest argument for UCR.

Riverside averages $2,269 a month. A studio runs $1,702, a one-bedroom $1,965, a two-bedroom $2,424 and a three-bedroom $2,979, which works out at about $993 per person.

California cityPer bedroom in a 3 bed
Riverside$993
San Luis Obispo$1,281
Los Angeles$1,461
Santa BarbaraAbout $1,728 in a 2 bed

Riverside is the cheapest major student market in California. Sharing a three-bed there costs about $11,916 over twelve months against $17,532 in Los Angeles, a difference of $5,616 a year or $22,464 across four years.

Now combine that with the admissions figure, because the combination is the point. UC Riverside is the most accessible UC campus and it sits in California's cheapest student market. On a total-cost basis, nothing else in the UC system competes. UCR is widely treated as the UC you settle for; the arithmetic says it is the UC that makes sense.

One honest caveat: California's cheapest is still expensive. At $993 a bedroom, Riverside costs more than every city in our Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Pennsylvania clusters. Columbus runs $563, Troy $735. California has no cheap option, only a least-expensive one, which the colleges in California guide sets out in full.

Flagged for review. Riverside rent is September 2026 market data across all housing, not student-specific rates.

UCR guarantees first-year housing. Before the second-year decision read college dorms versus off-campus housing, and how to book on-campus housing at US universities covers the process. Take the apartment tour checklist to viewings, and read what subletting means before signing a twelve-month lease against a nine-month year. International students should read renting without a credit history in the USA and co-signing student leases in the USA early.

Who UCR Suits

It suits California residents with solid rather than exceptional transcripts who want a UC degree. At 76.4% and test-free, a high-3s GPA makes this a realistic target, and Cal Grant or the Middle Class Scholarship can carry much of the $15,588 systemwide tuition.

It suits cost-constrained students above any other UC. Riverside's $993 a bedroom is the cheapest student housing in the state, and over four years that advantage is worth more than most scholarships.

It suits students applying to CHASS, where the campus-wide 76.4% is probably conservative, provided they stop looking for a published college-level figure that does not exist.

It suits you least well if you are counting on test scores to strengthen a weaker transcript. UCR is test-free and your GPA carries the whole application, so there is no second lever.

It also suits you less well if you want the prestige positioning of Berkeley or UCLA. UCR is the accessible UC and does not pretend otherwise; what it offers instead is a UC degree at the lowest total cost in the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the UCR acceptance rate?

UC Riverside's acceptance rate is 76.4%. UCR admitted 44,343 students from 58,048 applications and enrolled 5,422, making it the most accessible UC campus.

What is the uc riverside acceptance rate yield?

About 12%. UCR admitted 44,343 students and 5,422 enrolled, so roughly seven in eight admitted students chose elsewhere, usually another UC.

What is the ucr chass acceptance rate?

UCR does not publish a separate rate for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The 76.4% figure is campus-wide. Any CHASS-specific percentage you find is an estimate rather than a published figure.

What are the ucr gpa requirements?

UCR publishes no minimum, but enrolled first-years averaged a 3.84 GPA with 34.6% at 4.0. Since UCR is test-free, your transcript carries the entire application.

Do you need SAT scores for UC Riverside?

No. UC Riverside is test-free, meaning SAT and ACT scores are not used in admission at all. Published score ranges for UCR are historical reporting artefacts and do not reflect current practice.

Why do some sites show SAT scores for a test-free university?

Because institutions report historical score data to federal surveys, and aggregator sites display that data alongside current policy without reconciling the two. The scores describe students who took a test the university did not use.

Is UC Riverside easier to get into than other UCs?

Yes, substantially. At 76.4% it is the most accessible UC campus. The enrolled class still averages a 3.84 GPA, so it is accessible rather than unselective.

How much is rent in Riverside?

Riverside averages $2,269 a month, with a three-bedroom at $2,979, about $993 per person. That is the cheapest major student market in California.

Resolving All Three

Three contradictions, three resolutions worth carrying away.

UCR is test-free, so the SAT ranges published beside its name are historical noise and your transcript is the whole application. The 76.4% rate coexists with a 3.84 average because UCR draws from the UC system's shared pool and admits most of it. And the UCR acceptance rate for CHASS is not a published number, so stop hunting for it and apply where your academic case is strongest.

What survives all three is the cost finding, and it is the one most people miss: the most accessible UC sits in the cheapest city in California.
