Knowing your University of Sheffield term dates early makes the whole year easier to manage. It tells you when to book your train home, when your accommodation contract actually needs to start, and roughly when you can expect to be buried in deadlines. Sheffield does not use the old three-term system that a lot of people still picture. It runs two semesters, Autumn and Spring, and the year is built around them.

This guide lays out the confirmed dates for 2025/26 and the published dates for 2026/27, both taken from the University's own semester calendar. You will also find the Christmas closure dates, which are not the same thing as the teaching break, plus practical notes on exams, travel and accommodation that most date pages leave out.

How the Sheffield Academic Year Is Structured

Sheffield splits the year into two semesters rather than three terms. Each semester has teaching weeks, a vacation, and then a return period that usually carries assessments or exams.

The Autumn semester is the long one. Teaching runs for twelve weeks before the Christmas break, then you come back in January for a few more weeks that often include exams or hand-ins. The Spring semester follows the same shape: a block of teaching, the Easter vacation, then a final stretch that runs into June.

The practical takeaway is that the academic year does not neatly stop in December and restart in February. January and parts of June are still very much "term" for assessment purposes, even when teaching has wound down. People who book flights based on when lectures end sometimes get caught out by a January exam they forgot about.

University of Sheffield Term Dates 2025/26

This is the current academic year. These dates are confirmed.

Autumn semester 2025/26

Welcome Week runs from 22 to 27 September 2025, with teaching starting on 29 September 2025. That first block of teaching continues until 20 December 2025, which works out at twelve weeks.

After that comes the Christmas vacation, roughly four weeks off. Teaching and assessment resume on 19 January 2026 and run to 7 February 2026. Those three weeks back are where a lot of January exams and coursework deadlines sit, so it is worth treating the Christmas break as study time rather than a clean holiday.

Spring semester 2025/26

The Spring semester begins on 9 February 2026. You get about seven weeks of teaching before things pause for the Easter vacation at the end of March. Teaching picks back up on 20 April 2026 and continues until 13 June 2026, which is when the academic year officially ends.

That final run is the heavy one. Summer exams, final projects and dissertations all tend to land here, so for finalists especially, June is the date that really matters.

University of Sheffield Term Dates 2026/27

If you are applying, planning a longer accommodation booking, or just like to think ahead, here are the published 2026/27 dates.

Autumn semester 2026/27

Welcome Week falls on 21 to 26 September 2026, with teaching from 28 September 2026 to 19 December 2026. The post-Christmas return runs from 18 January 2027 to 6 February 2027.

Spring semester 2026/27

Spring teaching starts on 8 February 2027 and runs to 20 March 2027, followed by the Easter vacation. The year then finishes with a longer closing block from 12 April 2027 to 12 June 2027.

The shape is almost identical to 2025/26, which is genuinely useful: if you plan around one year, the rhythm of the next will feel familiar.

University of Sheffield Christmas Closure

Here is the bit that trips people up. The Christmas teaching break and the University Christmas closure are two different things.

The teaching break is about four weeks long, covering the gap between the end of Autumn teaching in late December and the January return. The Christmas closure is the period when University buildings and services actually shut down. For 2025, the University closes from midday on Wednesday 24 December 2025 and reopens at 9am on Monday 5 January 2026.

A few things to keep in mind during the closure:

  • Some libraries and study spaces keep limited or 24/7 hours over the break, but services around them (cafes, support desks, shops) often close or run reduced hours.
  • If you live in University accommodation, you can usually stay over the holidays, but you should check what is open nearby before everyone leaves.
  • Anything you need from a staffed service, like a letter for a visa or a bank, is best sorted before the closure starts.

If you are an international student staying in Sheffield for Christmas, the closure dates matter more than the teaching dates, because that is when the city itself goes quiet.

How Long Is the Semester Break in the UK?

This comes up a lot, and the honest answer is that it varies. At Sheffield, the Christmas vacation is around four weeks and the Easter vacation is around three. The long summer break is different again, because it depends on when your last exam or deadline falls rather than a fixed teaching date.

Across UK universities the pattern is broadly similar: roughly three to four weeks at Christmas, two to three at Easter, and a long summer that can stretch from June to September for students who are not resitting or doing summer projects. If you are comparing Sheffield with other universities, do not assume the dates line up exactly. They rarely do, even between places in the same city.

Exam Periods and Key Deadlines

Sheffield does not run all exams in one giant block, which is something a simple calendar will not tell you. Some assessment happens in that January return window after the Christmas break, and the bulk of summer exams sit in the final Spring run that ends in mid-June.

Exact exam timetables are released by the University during the year and can differ by department and module, so treat the semester dates as the frame and your departmental timetable as the detail. Postgraduate, medical, dental and teacher-training (PGCE) students often follow non-standard dates entirely, so if you are on one of those courses, check your programme calendar rather than the standard one.

Planning Accommodation and Travel Around Term Dates

This is where term dates stop being trivia and start costing money.

Accommodation contracts rarely match teaching dates. A lot of student tenancies run for 44, 48 or 51 weeks, not for the weeks you are actually being taught. If you sign a 51-week contract thinking you only need term time, you are paying for the summer too. Line up the contract length with when you genuinely need a room, including any summer exams or a dissertation period.

Book travel around assessment, not just teaching. Trains and flights out of the UK in late December and mid-June get expensive fast. Booking early helps, but only if you book around the right dates. Check whether you have a January exam before you commit to a long trip home over Christmas.

Watch the move-in window. Welcome Week is when most arrivals happen, so the few days before it are peak time for booking removal help, airport pickups and the first big supermarket shop. Sorting a delivery slot or a taxi in advance saves a stressful first day.

Notes for International Students

A few things matter more if you are coming from outside the UK.

Your visa start date and your accommodation start date will not automatically match your teaching dates, so check all three together before you book flights. Arriving a few days before Welcome Week is sensible, since it gives you time to register, collect keys and recover from the journey before induction starts.

The breaks are also a real opportunity. The Peak District sits right on Sheffield's doorstep, and cities like Manchester, Leeds and York are a short train ride away, which makes the Christmas and Easter vacations good windows for travel if you are not flying home. For anything visa-related, sort it well before the Christmas closure, when support services are shut. Our student visa guide and student discounts page are worth a look before you arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do University of Sheffield terms start in 2025?

Welcome Week begins on 22 September 2025 and teaching starts on 29 September 2025 for the Autumn semester.

How long is the semester break in the UK?

At Sheffield, the Christmas vacation is about four weeks and the Easter vacation is about three. Summer is longer and depends on your exam and deadline schedule. Most UK universities follow a similar pattern, though exact dates vary.

When is the University of Sheffield Christmas closure?

For 2025, the University closes from midday on 24 December and reopens at 9am on 5 January 2026. This building closure is shorter than the four-week teaching break around it.

When does the 2025/26 academic year end at Sheffield?

The Spring semester runs until 13 June 2026, which is the end of the standard academic year. The 2026/27 year ends on 12 June 2027.

Does Sheffield run on terms or semesters?

Semesters. There are two, Autumn and Spring, each made up of teaching weeks, a vacation and a return period for assessment.

Are term dates the same for every course?

No. Standard undergraduate programmes follow the published semester dates, but medicine, dentistry, PGCE and many postgraduate courses run on their own calendars. Always check your department's dates.

When should I book travel home for the holidays?

Early, but around your assessment dates rather than the last day of teaching. Confirm whether you have a January exam before booking a long Christmas trip.

Final Thoughts

Sheffield's calendar looks like a wall of dates until you see the pattern behind it: two semesters, each with teaching, a break, and a return for assessment, ending in mid-June. Once that clicks, the rest of your planning gets easier. You know when to revise, when to travel, and how long you actually need a room for.

The two dates worth writing down now are the academic year end, 13 June 2026 this year, and the Christmas closure from 24 December to 5 January, since that one quietly catches people out. Everything else fits around those.
