UVA Acceptance Rate: Four Different Numbers, and Yours Is One of Them

There is no such thing as the UVA acceptance rate. There are four of them, they range from 30% to 13%, and which one governs your application is settled before you write a word of your essay.

The figure everyone quotes is about 15%, roughly 10,150 admitted from around 64,000 applications for the Class of 2029. That number is an average of two very different admissions processes, and treating it as your odds will mislead you in one direction or the other by a factor of two.

Which UVA Acceptance Rate Applies to You?

Two variables decide it: whether you are a Virginia resident, and whether you apply in the binding Early Decision round.

*Early DecisionEarly Action and Regular
Virginia residentAbout 30%About 25%
Out of stateAbout 21%About 13%

An in-state student applying Early Decision faces roughly 30%. An out-of-state student in the regular pool faces about 13%. That is a two and a third times difference, and neither applicant appears anywhere in the 15% headline.

Notice something else in that table. For a Virginian, the early round is worth about five points. For an out-of-state applicant it is worth eight. Early Decision helps outsiders more in absolute terms, which is the reverse of the usual assumption that early rounds mainly reward the locals.

Flagged for review. These are Class of 2029 figures from a third-party analysis. Confirm against UVA's own published data before relying on them.

Why Two Thirds of the Class Is Already Spoken For

The structure behind those numbers is not a secret and it is not discretionary. Roughly two thirds of every UVA class is made up of Virginia residents, with the Class of 2029 landing at 66% in-state and 34% out-of-state.

That is the whole explanation. UVA is a public university with an obligation to the state that funds it, and it meets that obligation by admitting Virginians at about double the out-of-state rate.

For an applicant from outside Virginia, the practical consequence is worth stating plainly. You are not competing for a seat in the class. You are competing for a seat in the third of the class available to you, against a large share of the 64,000 applications. No essay, no test score and no counsellor can move that structural boundary.

This is also where UVA parts company with its own state system. Virginia Tech, forty miles away, admits out-of-state applicants at 58.67% against 47.33% in-state, because so few of its non-resident admits actually enrol. Two Virginia flagships, residency advantages pointing in opposite directions. Our Virginia Tech acceptance rate guide works through why, and the colleges in Virginia guide sets the two side by side.

Should You Apply Early Decision?

The statistical case is real. So is the cost, and it is the part that gets skipped.

Early Decision at UVA is binding. Admitted, you must attend and withdraw your other applications, which means you accept UVA's financial aid package without ever seeing what anyone else would have offered. For a family whose circumstances are straightforward, that is a manageable trade. For a family weighing a large merit award elsewhere, or with complicated finances, it is a genuine risk taken in exchange for a few percentage points.

UVA also runs a non-binding Early Action round at about 16% overall, which captures much of the early-round benefit for in-state applicants without the commitment. At 25% in-state through Early Action against 30% through Early Decision, a Virginian gives up roughly five points to keep full freedom over their aid comparison.

That is a defensible trade. For an out-of-state applicant choosing between 21% and 13%, it is a harder call, and the honest answer is that Early Decision only makes sense if UVA is unambiguously your first choice and the money works regardless.

What the Admitted Students Look Like

Ninety percent of enrolled first-years arrived with a 4.0 GPA or better. Another 7% sat between 3.75 and 3.99.

Read that twice, because it changes how you should interpret your own transcript. A 3.9 at UVA is not a strong application, it is a below-median one. The GPA distribution here is tighter than at almost any public university in the country.

Test scores for the Class of 2028 ran 1410 to 1520 on the SAT and 32 to 35 on the ACT in the middle 50%.

None of which makes admission likely, and this is the part every applicant needs to internalise at a 13% or 25% rate: the great majority of rejected applicants also cleared these bars. Meeting the profile is the price of being considered, not evidence that you will be admitted.

UVA's yield is 40%, so two out of five admitted students enrol. That is high for a public university and consistent with UVA being a genuine first choice rather than a fallback.

Living in Charlottesville

Charlottesville is the most expensive student market in Virginia, and the gap is not small.

Average rent runs $2,179 a month. A three-bedroom averages $2,704, which is about $901 per person, against $718 in Richmond and $815 in Blacksburg. A studio costs $1,788 and a one-bedroom $1,840, so unlike Blacksburg and Harrisonburg there is no quirk to exploit: renting alone in Charlottesville is expensive in every format.

Over a twelve-month lease, sharing a three-bed in Charlottesville costs roughly $10,812 per person. The same arrangement in Richmond costs $8,616. That $2,196 difference is real money, though for most UVA applicants it is not a choice, since the university is where it is.

What you can control is when you start looking and how deeply you share. Browse student accommodation near the University of Virginia and the wider Charlottesville market.

UVA guarantees first-year housing and most students move off Grounds afterwards. Before you decide, read our comparison of college dorms versus off-campus housing, and take the apartment tour checklist to viewings. Leases here commonly run twelve months against a nine-month academic year, so what subletting means is worth reading before you sign. International students should arrange a guarantor early: see co-signing student leases in the USA and renting without a credit history in the USA.

Flagged for review. Charlottesville rent is August 2026 market data across all housing, not student-specific rates.

Who Should Have UVA on Their List

A Virginia resident with a 4.0 and strong testing should absolutely apply, and should stop reading the 15% figure as though it describes them. Twenty-five percent is a real chance, and a sizeable number of qualified Virginians talk themselves out of applying on the strength of a number that was never theirs.

An out-of-state applicant should apply if UVA is a genuine favourite and the list beneath it is honest. At 13% it sits alongside selective private universities, not alongside other state flagships, and it needs the same treatment: real effort on the schools you would actually attend.

Anyone choosing between UVA and Virginia Tech from outside Virginia should look hard at the Tech numbers before assuming UVA is the more prestigious gamble worth taking. On pure odds, the two are barely comparable.

And if you are considering the transfer route, Virginia's Guaranteed Admission Agreements are the strongest in the country. Two years at community college tuition followed by a guaranteed seat is a better deal than most applicants realise, and the colleges in Virginia guide covers how it works.

If You Do One Thing

Find your box in the table near the top of this page and write that number down instead of 15%.

If it says 25% or 30%, you are looking at a school you can realistically reach, and the main risk is not applying. If it says 13%, build the rest of your list as though UVA will say no, because four times out of five it will, and the applicants who handle that well are the ones who took their other applications seriously in October rather than in April.
