We created the Acolyte Scholarship to support international students — including La Trobe students — with the cost of housing in Australia.
Tram 86 is the most convenient — it stops at the Bundoora RMIT/La Trobe stop adjacent to the campus entrance and runs directly to Waterfront City Docklands via the CBD, stopping at Melbourne Central and Bourke Street Mall. The journey is approximately 45–50 minutes. La Trobe also operates a free shuttle bus to Macleod Station on the Hurstbridge line and Reservoir Station on the Mernda line, both giving faster CBD access by train.
As of 2023, international students in Australia can work 48 hours per fortnight during semester, with unlimited hours during official university breaks. The Victorian minimum wage for 2025–26 is A$24.10/hour for adults. Casual retail, hospitality, and tutoring roles are widely available around Bundoora, Preston, and Thornbury.
Strongly so. La Trobe has one of the largest Indian student communities of any Australian university — the La Trobe Indian Students Association (LISA) is highly active. The suburbs closest to campus (Preston, Reservoir) have strong South Asian communities with excellent grocery stores, restaurants, and Hindu temples. Diwali and Holi events are held on campus annually.
Australian private rentals don't use the UK guarantor model. Instead, rental applications require proof of income/savings, a student visa, and references. For new arrivals, providing La Trobe enrolment confirmation, 3–6 months of bank statements, and character references from home is standard. Some private landlords in Bundoora and Preston are experienced with international student applications and are flexible on requirements.
Most listings include water and internet. Electricity and gas are typically metered separately in Australian private rentals — clearly stated on each listing. On-campus accommodation (colleges and apartments) is generally bills-inclusive.
