Student FAQs

Streatham is Exeter's main campus — 300 acres of botanical parkland in the west of the city, home to most Arts, Social Sciences, Business, Law, Engineering, and Science departments. St Luke's is the eastern campus, home to Sport and Health Sciences and the Medical School. Penryn is a shared campus in Cornwall with Falmouth University, home to Humanities, Social Sciences, and some Science programmes. Your course determines your primary campus — check this before you search for accommodation, as it significantly affects which areas are most convenient.

St James Park railway station is directly adjacent to the Streatham Campus — one of the most unusual features of any UK university. The Avocet Line from St James Park runs along the scenic Exe Estuary to Exmouth in 35 minutes, with stops at Topsham and Lympstone Village. In summer, it's a genuinely extraordinary commute — estuary views, wildlife, and sand at the end. Dawlish, Teignmouth, and Paignton on the Riviera Line are also accessible via Exeter Central (15 min walk or bus from campus).

Exeter is competitive — particularly Pennsylvania Road and St David's, which fill from November–January. For September 2026, start searching from November. First-year students are guaranteed university accommodation if they apply by the deadline. Second-years moving to private rentals should act quickly as the best Pennsylvania Road properties go before Christmas.

Yes. Most Exeter landlords accept international guarantors — the university has over 6,000 international students and the local market is experienced with this. Housing Hand is widely accepted for properties requiring UK-based guarantors.

Most listings include water, electricity, and broadband — clearly stated on each listing. Exeter private student rents average £150–£210/week in Pennsylvania Road and St David's.

University of Exeter

The University of Exeter is a leading UK university in the southwest of England, known for strong teaching, research, and a campus setting that combines green space with easy city access.

Its main Exeter campuses are Streatham and St Luke's. Popular subject areas include business, law, engineering, computer science, medicine, education, psychology, sport science, humanities, and environmental science.

Exeter appeals to students who want a smaller, walkable city with strong academic reputation, reliable transport links, independent food and nightlife, and quick access to Devon's coast and countryside.

Streatham Campus is the university's main campus, set on a hillside northwest of the city centre. It includes the Forum, main library, student services, teaching buildings, green spaces, and several accommodation areas.

St Luke's Campus is closer to the city centre and is used by students in areas such as education, sport and health sciences, and medical sciences. The two campuses are connected by walking routes, buses, and cycling options.

Because Exeter is compact, many students can live between campus and the city centre and still keep daily travel simple.

Students usually choose between university residences, private purpose-built student accommodation, shared houses, and studios. Streatham Campus students often look around Pennsylvania, Mount Pleasant, St James, and the city centre.

St Luke's students may prefer Heavitree, St Leonards, or city-centre options because they reduce the daily walk to lectures while keeping shops and restaurants close.

When comparing Exeter accommodation, check the walking route to your exact campus, whether bills are included, contract length, laundry access, deposits, and guarantor rules.

Pennsylvania is popular for students who want to stay close to Streatham Campus and do not mind the hill.

St James works well for students who want a balance between campus, Exeter Central station, and city-centre nightlife.

Mount Pleasant can offer good access to both Streatham and the city, with a strong student-house feel.

Heavitree and St Leonards are useful options for students based around St Luke's Campus or anyone looking for a quieter residential setting.

Exeter has two especially useful railway stations for students: Exeter Central and Exeter St Davids. Exeter Central is closest to the city centre, while St Davids provides major regional and national rail links.

Local buses connect Streatham Campus, St Luke's Campus, the city centre, and residential areas. Many students walk daily, but the hills around Streatham mean journey times can feel different depending on direction.

Direct trains connect Exeter with London, Bristol, Plymouth, Cardiff, and other southwest destinations, making weekend travel straightforward.

Exeter Cathedral, the Quayside, Gandy Street, Princesshay, Northernhay Gardens, and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum are all part of regular student life in the city.

The Quayside is especially popular for walks, cafes, pubs, and low-cost social plans, while Gandy Street and Queen Street offer restaurants and bars closer to the centre.

Exeter's location is a major advantage: beaches, Dartmoor, and Devon countryside are all realistic day trips when students want a break from campus.
