Student FAQs

It depends on your course. Most students are at Penrhyn Road (main campus) — Kingston town centre is ideal, with Surbiton as a cheaper alternative. Art and Design students at Knights Park should also look at Kingston town centre as both are close. Business School students at Kingston Hill do well in Norbiton or Kingston town. Engineering students at Roehampton Vale can live in Kingston and use the free inter-campus bus, or look at Roehampton and Putney for shorter commutes.

Kingston is 28 minutes by train to London Waterloo — very manageable. Rent is significantly lower than equivalent areas in inner London, while you get a proper riverside town with character rather than a city bedsit. Most students find it the best of both worlds: campus town life with London easily reachable for internships, events, and nights out.

Yes. Most landlords in the Kingston network accept international guarantors. For properties requiring UK-based guarantors, Housing Hand and similar services are widely used by KU international students. Kingston University's accommodation team can also provide guidance through their FutureLets service.

Kingston competes directly with London for rental stock — start from March–April for September. Kingston University guarantees a halls place for first-year students who apply early, but places fill fast. For private accommodation, anything from May onwards risks losing the best options at the best prices.

Yes. New Malden, 10 minutes by train, has a large South Asian community with authentic Indian restaurants, grocers, and a welcoming atmosphere. Kingston town centre itself has several Indian restaurants including Chakra and Roz Ana. The university is one of the most internationally diverse in the UK — students from 140+ countries makes for a genuinely multicultural community.
