UCAS is the system every undergraduate student in the UK uses to apply to university. One form, with up to five course choices, sent to universities on your behalf. If you are planning to study at a UK university in 2026, understanding how UCAS works is where everything starts.
This guide covers every stage: what UCAS is, how to register, the application steps, key deadlines, UCAS points, your Hub, and what happens after you submit. Each section links to a dedicated guide where you can go deeper.
What is UCAS?
UCAS stands for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. It is the UK's centralized platform for undergraduate university applications. Instead of applying to each university separately, you submit one UCAS application, and it goes to up to five universities at the same time.
UCAS was established in 1993. Over 700,000 students use it each year. It covers undergraduate degrees, foundation years, HNCs, HNDs, and some postgraduate initial teacher training routes.
| Applicant type | Uses UCAS? |
| UK undergraduate applicants | Yes |
| International undergraduate applicants | Yes |
| Postgraduate applicants | No: universities handle these directly |
| Apprenticeship applicants | No |
| Medicine, dentistry, veterinary applicants | Yes (via UCAS, with earlier deadlines) |
UCAS is free to register with. The application fee for 2025-26 entry is £28.50 for two or more choices, or £7.00 for a single choice.
How the UCAS application works
The UCAS application has six core sections. You complete them all inside the UCAS Hub before submitting.

Step 1: Register and create your UCAS Hub account
Go to ucas.com and create a free account. You will be given a personal ID. Keep this safe; you need it every time you log in.
Step 2: Choose your courses
You can apply to up to five courses. These can be the same subject at different universities, or different but related subjects. A typical strategy is two reach choices, two target choices, and one safer option. If applying to Oxford or Cambridge, you can only pick one, not both, in the same cycle.
Step 3: Complete your application sections
- Personal details
- Education history (all qualifications from secondary school onwards)
- Employment history (if applicable)
- Personal statement (three structured questions from 2026 entry)
- Reference from a teacher, tutor, or employer
Step 4: Write your personal statement
From the 2026 entry cycle, UCAS replaced the old 4,000-character freeform essay with three structured questions. Each answer needs at least 350 characters. The total cannot exceed 4,000 characters.
Step 5: Pay the application fee and submit
Once your referee has added their reference, you pay the fee and submit. Your application goes to all your chosen universities at the same time.
Step 6: Track progress in UCAS Hub
After submission, you follow your application entirely in the UCAS Hub. Universities update their decisions here, and you accept or decline offers through the Hub.

After you apply: offers, firm, and insurance
Once all your universities have responded, you choose a firm choice (the university you most want) and an insurance choice (a backup with lower entry requirements). You must reply by UCAS's reply deadline, typically in May.
On A-level results day (13 August 2026), Hub updates from around 8am. If you meet your firm offer conditions, your place is confirmed.
UCAS Clearing and Extra
UCAS Extra runs from 26 February to 1 July 2026 for students with no offers. UCAS Clearing runs from 5 July to 19 October 2026 for students without a confirmed place after results day. In Clearing, you phone universities directly, receive a verbal offer, and then add it in Hub.
Student accommodation after UCAS
Once your place is confirmed, student accommodation is the next major step. Most universities offer halls for first-year students. Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) is a private alternative. Acolyte Living helps students find verified rooms across the UK; browse at acolyteliving.com.
