What is worth noting is that schuh confirms this on its own website rather than leaving it to third-party discount platforms to describe. That sounds like a small thing. It is not. Most of the retailers in this cluster leave their student terms to be summarised by affiliate sites, which is how you end up with four pages giving four different percentages. schuh publishes its own terms, so you can check the source.
The discount occasionally rises to 20% during limited promotional periods, typically around freshers week in September and Black Friday in late November. schuh does not announce these far in advance. If your purchase is not urgent, September is worth waiting for.
What can you actually use it on?
This is where schuh is better than almost every comparable retailer.
The discount is valid on full price and sale items, online and in every schuh store, across schuh.co.uk, schuh.ie and schuh.eu.
Read that again if you have used student discounts before, because it is genuinely unusual. Most retailers explicitly exclude sale stock, on the reasonable basis that they have already discounted it. schuh does not.
The restrictions that do apply are mild:
- One discount per transaction
- Cannot be combined with other offers or promotions
- Product exclusions apply, including gift cards and tote bags

The schuh online form is the underrated one. The code it issues is personal and valid for the rest of your time as a student. You are not regenerating a single-use code every time you want trainers, which is what most platform-issued discounts require.
The social media route is the fastest if you need something in the next ten minutes and you are inside working hours. It is genuinely unusual for a retailer of this size to handle student verification by DM, and it works.
Can you use it in store?
Yes, in all schuh stores. Show a valid student ID at the till, or open the UNiDAYS app and show your digital student ID.
This matters more than it sounds. A large share of student discounts in UK retail are online only, including Sports Direct and Hollister. If you are buying trainers, being able to try them on before spending £120 is worth a lot, and being able to do that and get the discount is rarer than it should be.
What brands does it cover?
The 10% applies across the range: Nike, adidas, Converse, Dr. Martens, Vans, New Balance, Crocs, UGG and more. Sizing runs from adult 12 down to junior 7, which is broader than most high street footwear retailers.
One thing worth knowing that will save you real money: schuh Imperfects. These are shoes with minor cosmetic flaws, scuffs or marks, sold at a reduced price. Because the student discount works on reduced stock, you can stack the 10% on top of an already-marked-down pair.
Worked example. A pair listed at £110 appears in Imperfects at £70. Apply your student code and you pay £63. That is a 43% total saving on a current-model pair with a mark you will scuff over within a fortnight anyway.
That stacking is the single best use of the schuh student discount and it exists because of the sale-eligibility rule.
Is the delivery free?
Free standard delivery on orders over £25, otherwise £3. Next day delivery and click and collect are both available.
Given that most footwear costs more than £25, the threshold rarely bites. If you are buying socks or laces on their own, it will.
Is 10% actually a good discount?
Honestly, on its own, it is mid-table. Ten percent off a £100 pair of trainers is £10. That is a nice-to-have, not a decision-changer.
What makes schuh's version better than the headline suggests is the combination of three things most competitors do not offer together:
- It works on sale items
- It works in store
- The code lasts your whole course if you get it through schuh's own form
The value is in the stacking. Shop the sale or the Imperfects section first, then apply the code. Applied to full-price stock only, it is unremarkable. Applied the way the terms allow, it is one of the better footwear discounts available to UK students.
When should you not bother?
Two situations.
When schuh is running a site-wide promotion. The student discount cannot be combined with other offers. If there is a 25% off everything event running, take that instead.
When you are comparing against an outlet. Brand outlets and clearance sites will sometimes beat schuh's sale price by more than 10%, particularly on previous-season models. If you do not need this season's colourway, check there first.
