Nine times out of ten it is one of these three.
You are in a store
Sports Direct stores do not accept student cards or codes. The discount is sportsdirect.com only.
This catches out a lot of people, because comparable retailers work differently. schuh accepts student ID at the till. Superdry accepts a UNiDAYS digital ID in store. Sports Direct does neither. If a member of staff has told you they cannot apply it, they are correct and there is no manager who can override it.
Your basket contains sale items
The discount applies to full price stock only.
Given that a substantial share of the Sports Direct catalogue is marked down in some form at any given moment, this excludes more of the site than you would guess. A basket with one sale item in it may fail entirely rather than applying the discount to the full-price items only, depending on how the code is configured.
If your code is rejected, remove anything showing a was/now price and try again.
You are trying to stack it with another offer
The student discount cannot be combined with other promotions or promo codes. If there is a site-wide event running, you are choosing between them, not adding them together.

Is 10% off Sports Direct even worth it?
Here is the uncomfortable arithmetic, and it is the thing this page exists to tell you.
Sports Direct's entire commercial proposition is aggressive discounting. The Deal Zone, warehouse clearance and flash sales routinely run at 50% to 80% off. None of those reductions are compatible with the student code.
So the real question is not "10% or nothing." It is "10% off full price, or 60% off in the sale." The sale wins, almost every time.
Worked example. A pair of running shoes listed at £80. In the sale they drop to £45. Your student discount would have taken the full-price version to £72. The sale price is £27 cheaper and you cannot have both.
Where the discount does earn its place
New-season branded stock that has not yet been reduced. Current-season football boots and team kit are the clearest cases, because those are priced at RRP and stay there through the season, and Sports Direct's base price is already competitive.
If you need this season's specific boot in a specific colourway, the 10% is real money. If you are flexible on model or willing to wait, the sale will beat it.
What brands does Sports Direct actually carry?
Nike, adidas, Reebok, Umbro and Fila, alongside the in-house brands Everlast, Lonsdale, Dunlop, Slazenger and Karrimor. Over 600 UK stores and around 950 worldwide.
The in-house brand distinction is worth understanding before you compare prices. Karrimor, Slazenger and Lonsdale are Sports Direct's own labels, priced and specified accordingly. A Karrimor waterproof and a branded waterproof at three times the price are not the same product, and 10% off either does not change that comparison.
For a student buying gym kit that will be washed twice a week and replaced within two years, the in-house brands are often the sensible choice regardless of discount.
What about delivery?
Standard delivery is £4.99.
On a £30 basket, that £4.99 is more than the £3 your student discount saved you. Worth pausing on before you check out.
Click and collect is the usual workaround, though note that collecting in store does not let you apply an in-store student discount, because there isn't one.
The honest verdict
Use the code for full-price gym kit and current-season trainers, online. Ignore it entirely during sales, because the sale price will beat it and the terms will not let you combine them.
