Australian University Semester Structure Explained: Semesters vs Trimesters

Most Australian universities run two semesters a year, each with 12 to 14 weeks of teaching, followed by a short revision break called SWOT VAC and then a two to three week exam period. UNSW Sydney is the exception among the big research universities: it runs three trimesters a year, each with 10 teaching weeks, under a system it calls UNSW 3+.

That difference sounds small until you're booking accommodation. A semester system gives you roughly six months of predictable teaching, a mid-year break of four to six weeks, and one set of move-in and move-out dates each half of the year. A trimester system compresses the same content into shorter blocks with three intake points, which means more decisions about when to sign a lease and when it's cheaper to go month to month over a break.

This guide sets out how the semester and trimester systems differ, what SWOT VAC actually is, and the real 2026 dates for the University of Melbourne, Monash, UQ and UNSW, so you can plan a lease around teaching weeks rather than guess at them.

Semester vs trimester: what actually changes

A semester system, used by the University of Melbourne, Monash, UQ, and most other Australian universities, splits the year into two main teaching blocks of roughly six months each. Each semester runs 12 to 14 weeks of classes, then a SWOT VAC week, then two to three weeks of exams. Between Semester 2 exams (typically finishing mid to late November) and Semester 1 of the next year (typically starting in February), there's a break of about ten to twelve weeks, though most of that is summer holidays rather than an academic requirement.

UNSW's trimester system compresses the same annual course load into three terms instead of two semesters. Each term has 10 teaching weeks, a short study period, and a two-week exam block. Students in the standard UNSW 3+ model take a spread of eight courses across three terms each year rather than four courses in each of two semesters. UNSW says the model "aligns to the Northern Hemisphere university calendars," which matters for students doing an exchange or an internship that runs on a different academic year.

The practical difference for students is intensity. Ten teaching weeks covering the same unit content as 12 to 14 weeks means a faster pace: assignments land closer together and there's less slack if you fall behind in week 3. On the other hand, three intake points a year (rather than two) give students more flexibility to start a degree, take a term off, or do an accelerated load to finish early.

For accommodation, trimesters mean three sets of arrival and departure dates rather than two, and shorter gaps between them. A student in a semester system has one long break to think about (whether to keep a lease over summer or move out and back). A trimester student has three shorter gaps, each one a live question about whether to break a lease, sublet, or just keep paying rent through an empty fortnight.

What SWOT VAC actually is

SWOT VAC stands for Study Week Off Teaching, Vacation. It's the short break, usually five to seven days, that sits between the last day of teaching and the first day of exams. No classes run, no new content is delivered, and the week exists purely for exam revision.

It's not a holiday. Most students spend SWOT VAC catching up on readings, working through past exam papers, or finishing assignments that were due in the final teaching weeks. Libraries and 24-hour study spaces get busiest during SWOT VAC, and it's worth booking a spot in a quiet study space in advance if your accommodation doesn't have one.

The University of Melbourne's SWOT VAC for Semester 1, 2026 runs Monday 1 June to Friday 5 June, immediately before exams start on Tuesday 9 June. UQ's Semester 1 swot vac for 2026 runs 1 to 5 June as well, with exams starting the next Monday. UNSW's trimester equivalent is shorter (a study period of five to six days rather than a full SWOT VAC week), reflecting the more compressed term structure.

How this affects your lease and move-in dates

Semester start dates set the real demand curve for student accommodation, not the calendar year. Most purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) providers and share-house markets in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney see their tightest supply in the two to three weeks before Semester 1 or Semester 2 teaching begins, when Orientation Week activity peaks and international students are arriving in bulk.

A few practical points follow directly from the dates above.

Book before Orientation Week, not before teaching starts. The University of Melbourne's Semester 2, 2026 Orientation runs 20 to 24 July, a week before teaching starts on 27 July. Accommodation near campus fills fastest in the fortnight before Orientation, not the fortnight before classes.

Mid-semester breaks are not move-out windows. The one-week break in the middle of each semester (for example, UQ's 6 to 10 April 2026 break, or the University of Melbourne's late September to early October break) is too short to bother terminating a lease. Most accommodation contracts run for the full semester or year regardless.

The gap between Semester 2 exams and Semester 1 the next year is the real decision point. With Semester 2 exams finishing in mid to late November and Semester 1 not starting again until February or early March, that ten-to-twelve-week gap is where students weigh up whether to keep paying rent, sublet, or break a lease early. If you're not staying in Australia over the break, check your contract terms well before exams finish.

Trimester students face three shorter gaps, not one long one. UNSW's term breaks between Term 1 (ending May) and Term 2 (starting June), and between Term 2 (ending August) and Term 3 (starting September), are only a few weeks each. That makes short-term or flexible-lease accommodation more relevant for trimester students than the standard 12-month contract common in semester-based cities.

2026 semester dates: University of Melbourne, Monash, UQ, UNSW

These are the published 2026 dates as at 15 September 2026. Universities do adjust dates, so always confirm against the official page before booking around them, particularly for Monash where we've noted a secondary source below.

University of Melbourne (source: unimelb.edu.au/dates)

  • Semester 1: teaching 2 March to 31 May (12 teaching weeks), SWOT VAC 1 to 5 June, exams 9 to 26 June
  • Semester 2: teaching 27 July to 25 October (12 teaching weeks), mid-semester break 28 September to 4 October, SWOT VAC 26 to 30 October, exams 2 to 20 November

University of Queensland (source: about.uq.edu.au/academic-calendar)

  • Semester 1: teaching 23 February to 29 May (approximately 14 teaching weeks), mid-semester break 6 to 10 April, SWOT VAC 1 to 5 June, exams 6 to 20 June, census date 31 March
  • Semester 2: teaching 27 July to 30 October (approximately 14 teaching weeks), mid-semester break 28 September to 5 October, SWOT VAC 2 to 6 November, exams 7 to 21 November, census date 31 August

UNSW Sydney (source: unsw.edu.au, student key dates and UNSW 3+ pages)

  • Term 1: teaching 16 February to 24 April, study period 25 to 30 April, exams 1 to 14 May
  • Term 2: teaching 1 June to 7 August, study period 8 to 13 August, exams 14 to 27 August
  • Term 3: teaching 14 September to 20 November, study period 21 to 26 November, exams 27 November to 10 December

Monash University

  • Semester 1, 2026 census date is confirmed as Tuesday 31 March, published by the Monash Student Association. Monash's own dynamic calendar pages did not return readable teaching-week tables at the time of writing. A secondary source, Scape Student Accommodation, lists Monash's Semester 1 teaching running 2 March to 29 May with a mid-semester break 6 to 10 April, SWOT VAC 1 to 5 June and exams 8 to 26 June, and Semester 2 teaching running 27 July to 23 October with a break 28 September to 2 October, SWOT VAC 26 to 30 October and exams 2 to 20 November. We could not independently confirm these Monash date ranges against a Monash-hosted page and recommend checking monash.edu directly before relying on them for accommodation booking.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Australian universities use semesters?

No. Most do, including the University of Melbourne, Monash, UQ, ANU and most other public universities, but UNSW Sydney runs a trimester system (UNSW 3+) with three teaching terms a year instead of two semesters.

How many teaching weeks are in an Australian semester?

Typically 12 to 14 weeks, depending on the university. The University of Melbourne runs 12 teaching weeks per semester; UQ's 2026 calendar runs to approximately 14 teaching weeks per semester. UNSW's trimesters run 10 teaching weeks each.

What is SWOT VAC and how long does it last?

SWOT VAC (Study Week Off Teaching, Vacation) is the break between the end of teaching and the start of exams, used for revision. It usually runs five to seven days. There are no classes and no new content during SWOT VAC.

When does Semester 1 start in Australia in 2026? It varies by university. UQ's Semester 1, 2026 teaching starts 23 February. The University of Melbourne and Monash both start Semester 1 teaching on 2 March 2026. UNSW's Term 1 teaching starts earlier, on 16 February 2026.

What is a census date and why does it matter?

The census date is the deadline to withdraw from a unit without academic or financial penalty for that unit. After the census date passes, you're liable for the unit's fees even if you withdraw. UQ's Semester 1, 2026 census date is 31 March; Monash's Semester 1, 2026 census date is also 31 March.

Is UNSW's trimester system harder than a semester system?

It's not necessarily harder, but it is faster paced. Ten teaching weeks cover the same unit content that a semester system delivers over 12 to 14 weeks, so assignments and readings are more tightly spaced. Some students find the shorter terms let them focus on fewer subjects at once; others find the pace demanding.

How does semester structure affect when I should book student accommodation?

Demand for accommodation peaks in the two to three weeks before Orientation Week, which typically runs the week immediately before teaching starts. Booking before Orientation Week, rather than before the semester officially begins, gives you a better chance at your preferred location. See our guide on how to book student housing before arriving in Australia for a fuller timeline.

Bottom line

Semester structure isn't just an academic detail, it sets the calendar for when accommodation gets tight, when leases start and end, and when it's worth negotiating a shorter contract instead of a full 12-month one. The semester system used by the University of Melbourne, Monash and UQ gives you two predictable six-month blocks with one long mid-year break to plan around. UNSW's trimester system gives you three shorter, faster-paced terms with smaller gaps between them, which suits students who want more flexibility about when they start or pause but demands more attention to lease timing.

Whichever system your university runs, the dates that matter for housing are teaching start dates and Orientation Week, not the calendar date you happen to be searching. Confirm the current-year dates on your own university's official calendar page before signing anything, since institutions do shift dates year to year, and Monash in particular is worth double-checking directly given the gaps in what we could verify here.
