Griffith University's Nathan campus sits about a 20 minute drive south east of the Brisbane CBD, on the edge of Toohey Forest. Its Gold Coast campus sits inside the 200 hectare Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, with two light rail stations immediately adjacent. Both facts come straight from Griffith's own campus and student travel pages, and they already tell you most of what matters: one campus is a satellite of a capital city, the other is close to being its own small town.

This comparison is for a specific kind of decision. Not "which university is better" (it is the same university, same degrees, same student number), but "which campus and which city should I actually live near for the next three or four years." That choice affects your rent, your commute, your part-time job prospects and, for some degrees, which campus you are required to attend at all.

We have pulled housing cost data from Numbeo, transport detail from Griffith's own student travel pages, and course and facility information from griffith.edu.au. Where the university's own travel advice looked like a conservative buffer rather than a real-world drive time, we have said so rather than repeating it as fact.

Cost of living: the gap is real but not huge

Numbeo's city comparison puts a one bedroom apartment in the Gold Coast city centre at roughly A3,437.50amonthagainstA2,784.08 in Brisbane, a difference of about 23.5%. Move outside the centre and the gap narrows sharply: A2,090.00versusA1,924.58, only about 8.6% apart. The overall cost of living index, which folds in groceries, transport and everyday spending alongside rent, puts the Gold Coast roughly 7.8% above Brisbane.

The practical read is this. If you are chasing the cheapest possible rent, neither "city centre" figure is realistic for a student budget anyway, and the real comparison is between share houses and purpose-built student accommodation near each campus, not inner-city one bedroom units. The outside-centre numbers are closer to what a student actually pays, and the gap there is manageable rather than dramatic. Gold Coast living costs more, but not by the margin the headline CBD figures suggest. For a fuller breakdown of what students actually spend in Queensland, see our guide to the cost of living for students in Brisbane, Australia.

Numbeo's figures are crowdsourced, not an official government series, so treat them as a directional guide rather than an exact budget line.

Accommodation: colleges and towers versus share houses

Nathan has on-campus colleges, and Griffith's facilities page confirms both on-campus and off-campus accommodation options exist, without giving exact bed numbers. Students who do not secure a college place typically look at the surrounding suburbs: Mount Gravatt, Upper Mount Gravatt, Eight Mile Plains and further towards the CBD along the Pacific Motorway corridor, all served by Brisbane's bus network.

Gold Coast has moved harder and faster on purpose-built housing. A 460 bed tower, delivered with operator Campus Living Villages and reported in August 2026, takes on-campus capacity to close to 1,000 beds, with studio, two-bedroom and accessible apartment types, plus a pool, gym, cinema and communal kitchens. That is a meaningfully larger on-campus footprint than Nathan currently advertises, and it matters if you want to walk to lectures rather than commute to them.

Neither campus publishes a current vacancy rate or waitlist length on its public pages, so if a bed count is central to your decision, confirm live availability directly with the relevant college or Campus Living Villages before committing. For the general categories of housing available to students across Australia, our guide to types of student housing available in Australia is a useful starting point.

Transport and commute: two very different equations

Nathan's situation is straightforward. It sits about 20 minutes' drive from the Brisbane CBD, served by direct bus routes including the 125, 120, 134, 135 and 155, plus the GUIB service, and benefits from the South East Busway corridor. If you live anywhere along that busway, a 20 to 40 minute commute by bus is realistic on a normal day.

Gold Coast's situation is different in kind, not just degree. The campus has two G:link light rail stations immediately next to it, so if you live anywhere along that line, from Helensvale down through Southport and Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach, you are one tram ride from a lecture theatre with no transfer. That is arguably a simpler commute than Nathan's, provided you choose to live on the line.

Where it gets harder is moving between the two campuses. Griffith's own student travel advice recommends allowing up to two hours for the Gold Coast to Nathan trip, and a similar buffer the other way. That is almost certainly a conservative planning figure for someone who absolutely cannot be late to an exam, rather than typical door to door driving time, but it is still the university's official guidance, and it signals plainly that these are not two campuses you want to be shuttling between on a regular timetable. If your degree ever requires units at both, factor that buffer into your semester planning rather than assuming a quick hop down the M1.

Courses: more overlap than most students expect

A lot of core programs, business, law, IT, engineering, humanities, run at both Nathan and Gold Coast, so the campus choice for those degrees is really a lifestyle and cost decision, not an academic one. The exceptions matter, though. Griffith's Doctor of Medicine is taught at Gold Coast, tied directly into the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct and its teaching hospital links. Gold Coast's facilities page also lists dedicated dentistry, pharmacy and allied health clinics, built so students get supervised clinical practice from early in the course.

Nathan carries the university's research weight on paper, with more than 30 research centres based there, plus programs such as aviation (though aviation itself is also offered at Gold Coast, Mount Gravatt, Logan and South Bank, so it is not Nathan-exclusive). If you are in a health degree with a clinical placement component, check your specific program page rather than assuming either campus by default, since placements can sit at hospitals away from both campuses regardless.

Lifestyle and part-time work

This is the part Griffith's own pages do not cover, and where honesty matters most. Brisbane is a bigger labour market in absolute terms: more retail, more hospitality, more office and admin casual work concentrated in and around the CBD, which Nathan students can reach in that 20 minute run. The Gold Coast's economy leans harder on tourism and hospitality, which is abundant in peak season and visibly thinner outside it. A student relying on casual shifts through a Queensland winter may find more consistent hours in Brisbane's suburbs than in a beachside strip that quiets down once school holidays end.

Against that, Gold Coast offers a lifestyle Brisbane cannot: beach access within a short tram ride, a flatter, more self-contained precinct where university, housing, a hospital and recreation facilities sit inside one development, and noticeably less of the sprawl that defines getting around Brisbane's southern suburbs. Nathan students get proximity to a capital city's job market and culture, at the cost of a campus that is, by its own description, carved out of forest on the city's edge rather than embedded in a walkable precinct.

Neither tradeoff is better in the abstract. A student who needs steady part-time income and wants easy CBD access should weight Nathan higher. A student prioritising lifestyle, wanting to live inside a single connected precinct, or heading into medicine, dentistry or allied health, has a stronger practical case for Gold Coast.

Frequently asked questions

Is Griffith Gold Coast or Nathan more expensive to live near? Based on Numbeo's comparison, Gold Coast runs roughly 8 to 24% more expensive depending on whether you compare outside-centre or city-centre rent, with the overall cost of living index about 7.8% higher including rent.

Which Griffith campus has better public transport? Gold Coast's campus sits next to two G:link light rail stations, giving a direct, no-transfer ride for anyone living along that line. Nathan relies on direct bus routes and the South East Busway, which works well from along that corridor but is a different commuting model to a single light rail line.

Can I easily take classes at both Nathan and Gold Coast? Griffith's own student travel page advises allowing up to around two hours to travel between the two campuses, so regular back-and-forth attendance is not something to plan around casually. Check your specific program structure before assuming a single-day double-campus timetable is realistic.

Is medicine only taught at Gold Coast? Yes, Griffith's Doctor of Medicine program is based at the Gold Coast campus, tied to the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. Confirm the campus for any other health-related program directly on its course page, since placements and clinical components can vary.

Does Nathan or Gold Coast have more on-campus accommodation? Gold Coast's on-campus capacity is close to 1,000 beds following a 460-bed tower added in 2026 with operator Campus Living Villages. Nathan's facilities page confirms on-campus colleges exist but does not publish a current bed count, so direct comparison on raw numbers is not possible from public sources alone.

Is it cheaper to live further from either campus and commute in? Potentially, yes, particularly near Nathan where bus and busway access extends further into Brisbane's southern suburbs at lower rent than inner-city rates. For Gold Coast, living further down or up the light rail line can also reduce rent while keeping a direct commute, though savings are generally smaller than in Brisbane given the overall higher cost base.

Which campus is better for part-time work while studying? Brisbane's broader and more diverse job market gives Nathan students more consistent part-time work options year-round. Gold Coast's job market leans more heavily on tourism and hospitality, which can mean more seasonal variation in available shifts.

Bottom line

If steady part-time income, cheaper housing outside the centre and quick access to a capital city's broader job market matter most to you, Nathan is the stronger practical choice, and its direct bus and busway network makes a car unnecessary for most students living along the southern Brisbane corridor. If you are studying medicine, dentistry or allied health, Gold Coast is effectively the only sensible option given where those clinical facilities sit. And if lifestyle, beach access and living inside one connected, walkable precinct outweigh a modestly higher cost of living, Gold Coast's light rail access and growing on-campus housing stock make it the easier campus to build a self-contained student life around. Neither is the wrong answer. The right one depends on which column in the comparison table above you cannot compromise on.
