Why the UAE

What no one tells you before
you go but should.

Straight from students who've made the move. The real reasons to go, and the real things to prepare for.

Tax-free income while you study.

The UAE has zero personal income tax. Part-time work earnings are fully yours — no deductions. For international students balancing tuition and living costs, this makes a real difference.

Post-study work pathway.

The UAE offers a Job Seeker Visa and Green Visa for graduates of accredited institutions. You can stay up to 12 months after graduation to find work without needing an employer to sponsor you upfront.

World-class healthcare access.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have some of the most advanced healthcare facilities in the region. Student health insurance is mandatory and often included in university fees — you are covered from day one.

Global career launchpad.

The UAE is headquarters to thousands of multinationals. Dubai alone hosts regional HQs for Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs. Internship pipelines from UAE universities are exceptional for business, tech, and finance students.

The honest bit: Dubai is expensive.

Dubai is one of the most expensive cities in the world. A studio near a university can cost AED 4,000–7,000/month. The play is to look at Sharjah or Ajman — same UAE experience, fraction of the rent. Sharjah is 20 minutes from Dubai and significantly more affordable. Budget for this before you apply.

Unlimited data plan (fair use 30GB at full speed). Best coverage in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. If you are studying outside Dubai, this is the stronger network. No contract.

Work rights

What you can do, and when.

The actual rules — no hedging. UAE student work rights are more restrictive than UK/Ireland but still worthwhile.

During term time

  • Part-time work is allowed with a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your university.
  • Most universities permit up to 20 hours per week on campus or with approved employers.
  • Off-campus work requires a separate part-time work permit from MOHRE.
  • Not allowed: freelancing or self-employment without a specific freelance licence.

During official vacations

During official university vacation periods, full-time work is permitted with your student visa and university NOC. Many students do internships during summer — this is strongly encouraged and counts toward graduation requirements at several UAE universities.

After graduation — Job Seeker Visa

After graduation from an accredited UAE institution, you can apply for the UAE Job Seeker Visa — valid for 12 months, no employer sponsor required. For graduates with a GPA of 3.5+ from a top-ranked university, the Green Visa offers 5 years of residency with the right to work.

Student reviews

From students who've done what you're about to do.

“Finding accommodation in Dubai as an international student is brutal — everything online is either overpriced or a scam. Acolyte physically verified my flat in Sharjah. I saved almost AED 2,000 a month by staying there instead of Dubai Marina.”

“The Emirates ID process is confusing when you first arrive. My Aco Buddy walked me through every step — medical test, typing centre, ICA portal. I had my ID in 12 days. Without that guidance I would have been lost for weeks.”

Fatima O.

Nigeria · MBA, University of Dubai

“My parents were worried about me moving to Dubai alone. The Acolyte verification report showed them the actual photos, the inspection notes, and the landlord details. My dad read it twice and then stopped calling me every day.”
