Most education loan delays are not credit decisions. They are missing documents. A file that arrives complete gets sanctioned in three to five weeks. A file that arrives in pieces takes three months, and by then the visa slot has gone.

This is the full checklist, with what each lender is actually looking for inside each document.

Eligibility criteria

The student

  • Indian citizen, generally 18 to 35 at application
  • Confirmed admission to a recognised full-time institution abroad
  • Admission through a merit or entrance route rather than a paid seat
  • Consistent academic record, with any gap year explained in writing
  • Required test scores, typically IELTS, TOEFL, GRE or GMAT depending on the course. If you are still at this stage, see what IELTS score UK universities require

The co-applicant Every Indian lender requires one, usually a parent, guardian, spouse or sibling. The underwriting is really about them, because they carry repayment through the moratorium years.

  • Documented, stable income, salaried or self-employed
  • Credit score of 750 and above for clean approval, 700 to 750 workable at a higher rate
  • Comfortable fixed obligation to income ratio, meaning existing EMIs are not eating the salary
  • No settled, written-off or 90-day-overdue accounts in recent history

The course and institution Regular graduate, postgraduate, doctoral and recognised professional programmes are funded. Part-time, online, unaccredited and very short courses generally are not. Several lenders keep approved institution lists that improve your amount, rate and turnaround, so ask whether yours is on one before you spend on valuation charges.

Security Secured loans need tangible collateral with clear title. Unsecured loans need a stronger co-applicant profile and a stronger university. Which route you are on changes your document list substantially. See collateral free education loans for abroad.

Student documents

  • Admission or offer letter from the university, on letterhead
  • University cost of study statement, showing tuition and living cost breakdown for every year
  • Mark sheets and certificates from class 10, class 12 and every subsequent qualification
  • Entrance test scorecards: GRE, GMAT, or as applicable
  • Language test scorecard: IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, or as applicable
  • Valid passport, with sufficient validity to cover the course
  • Passport-size photographs
  • Aadhaar and PAN
  • Proof of residence
  • Scholarship award letters, if any, since these count towards your margin contribution
  • Statement of purpose, requested by some lenders. If you are drafting one, see our SOP sample for UK universities

Co-applicant documents

Salaried

  • Aadhaar, PAN, proof of residence
  • Last six months of salary slips
  • Form 16 and income tax returns for the last two to three years
  • Twelve months of bank statements for the salary account
  • Employment certificate or appointment letter
  • Statements for every existing loan

Self-employed or business

  • Aadhaar, PAN, proof of residence
  • Income tax returns with computation of income for the last three years
  • Audited profit and loss account and balance sheet for two to three years
  • Business registration proof, GST registration where applicable
  • Twelve months of current account statements
  • Statements for every existing loan

What the lender is reading here is not the salary figure. It is the pattern: whether income is steady, whether declared income matches bank credits, and how much of it is already committed to EMIs.

Collateral documents, for secured loans

  • Original title deed with the complete chain of ownership
  • Approved building plan or layout sanction
  • Latest property tax receipts
  • Encumbrance certificate covering the period the lender specifies
  • Valuation report from a lender-empanelled valuer
  • Legal opinion from a lender-empanelled advocate
  • Consent and signatures from every joint owner
  • For a fixed deposit as security: the deposit receipt and a lien marking request
  • For an LIC policy: the policy document and current surrender value statement

Agricultural land is almost universally refused. Property with a disputed or incomplete ownership chain will stop the file dead, and fixing it takes months, not weeks.

What causes rejections and delays

Co-applicant credit issues. The most common single cause. A dispute on a credit report takes 30 to 45 days to resolve, which is why you pull the report six months out, not six weeks.

Income that does not match the returns. Bank credits well above declared income raise questions the lender will ask and you will have to answer.

Incomplete property chain. A missing link deed in a 30-year ownership chain is a real problem.

Unexplained academic gaps. A gap is fine. An unexplained gap is not. Write a short, factual note and attach it.

Course or institution outside policy. Confirm eligibility in writing before spending anything.

Cost sheet that understates living expenses. This does not cause rejection, it causes underborrowing, which you feel every month for two years. Check the university estimate against real prices: living expenses in the UK, Edinburgh for Indian students, or cost of living in Dallas, and price actual rooms through Acolyte Living's verified listings.

Preparation sequence

Six months out. Pull credit reports for every possible co-applicant. Dispute errors. Start collecting property documents if you are going secured.

Four to five months out. Assemble income documents. Order the encumbrance certificate. Confirm in writing that your institution and course fall within each shortlisted lender's policy.

On receiving your admission letter. Submit to three or four lenders in parallel, mixing a public sector bank, a private bank and an NBFC.

Three months out. Sanction letters in hand. Compare total cost rather than headline rate, using the framework in best bank for education loan for abroad.

Two months out. Accept one, submit the sanction with your visa application, and match the disbursement schedule against your tuition deadline and your accommodation deposit date.

Practical formatting notes

  • Scan everything at 300 dpi in colour. Photographs of documents get rejected.
  • Name files consistently: coapplicant-itr-fy2025.pdf, not IMG_4471.jpg.
  • Keep one folder per lender, since each will ask for a slightly different subset.
  • Keep originals accessible. Branches will ask to see them even after accepting scans.
  • Sign consistently across every form. A signature mismatch sends the file back.

FAQs

What are the criteria for an education loan for abroad studies?

Indian citizenship, confirmed admission to a recognised full-time course abroad, a consistent academic record, required test scores, and a co-applicant with documented income and a sound credit history. Collateral is required above each lender's unsecured limit.

What documents are required?

Student academic and identity records, the admission letter and university cost sheet, co-applicant income and bank records, and collateral papers if the loan is secured. Full lists above.

Can I apply before I have an admission letter?

Some lenders issue an in-principle or pre-approval based on your profile, which helps planning. A formal sanction, which is what a visa application needs, almost always requires the admission letter.

How long does sanction take?

Three to five weeks with a complete file, considerably longer if collateral valuation and legal opinion are still pending.

What credit score does my co-applicant need?

750 and above is comfortable. 700 to 750 is workable at a higher rate. Below 700, expect either refusal or a much more expensive offer.

For the complete process from eligibility through repayment, see the main guide to education loans for abroad studies, and for how rates are priced on your file, abroad education loan interest rates in India.

Lender requirements differ and change. Confirm the current checklist with your lender before applying. This is information, not financial advice.
