About Glasgow
Glasgow is Scotland's largest city, with a population of around 650,000 in the city and 1.8 million across the wider region. It has a reputation built partly on its industrial past and partly on the arts, music, and nightlife culture that grew up in the decades after that industry left. Both reputations are deserved.
The West End, centred on Byres Road and the Hillhead area, is one of the nicest urban neighbourhoods in the UK for a student to live in — independent shops, a dense café culture, Kelvingrove Park next door, and the University of Glasgow's gothic main building at its heart. The city centre has a different energy: more commercial, better for late nights, a bit rougher around the edges, and very affordable for what it offers.
Glasgow has a strong music scene (Barrowlands, King Tut's, the SSE Hydro), one of the best collections of art galleries outside London, and a food scene that's improved dramatically in the past ten years. It is also notably friendly — Glaswegians have a deserved reputation for talking to strangers, which helps if you're arriving alone from another country.

Why students choose Glasgow
- The University of Glasgow. One of the world's oldest universities (established 1451) and consistently in the UK top 15. Its campus in the West End is visually impressive and the university's research output across medicine, engineering, and the arts is substantial.
- Three other strong universities. Strathclyde has an excellent engineering and business school and strong industry links. Glasgow Caledonian is well-regarded in health, nursing, and applied sciences. The Royal Conservatoire is one of the leading performing arts conservatoires in Europe.
- Value for money. Glasgow gives you a major European city at a price point that's significantly below London, Manchester, or Edinburgh. The food, drink, and entertainment scene is good and genuinely affordable.
- The music and arts scene. Glasgow punches well above its weight. The city has produced more successful bands than almost any other UK city of comparable size, and the live music infrastructure — venues, festivals, grassroots gigs, is exceptional.
- Transport. Glasgow has its own subway (the Clockwork Orange, as locals call it), an extensive bus network, and excellent rail links. Edinburgh is 50 minutes away. The airport is 20 minutes from the centre.
Find student accommodation in Glasgow by area
West End and Hillhead
The beating heart of Glasgow student life, and directly adjacent to the University of Glasgow's main campus. Byres Road is the central strip — good coffee, good food, Oran Mor at the top, and the Botanic Gardens a short walk away. Hillhead Underground station puts the rest of the city within 10 minutes. This is the most popular and most competitive area for student accommodation. Expect rents at or above the city average.
City Centre and Merchant City
Closer to Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian, the city centre suits students who don't need to get to the West End campus regularly. It's louder, busier, and better for nightlife. Merchant City in particular is a well-established bar and restaurant district. Rent can vary significantly depending on the specific street
Partick and Finnieston
Directly west of the West End, Partick is slightly more affordable than Hillhead and still very well-connected. Finnieston has had significant investment in the past decade — good restaurants, bars, and the SEC/Hydro nearby. Both are popular with second and third year students and postgrads who want the West End feel without the West End prices.
Kelvinbridge and Great Western Road
Between Hillhead and the city's north, this area is popular with University of Glasgow students who want slightly more space than the Hillhead flatshares. Great Western Road is a wide boulevard with reliable bus links into the West End and the centre. Quieter evenings, reasonable prices.
