• •Safety. Whitechapel is densely populated with constant footfall, which helps. Petty theft and moped snatching do occur along Whitechapel Road, so keep valuables out of sight when walking.
• •Green space. Altab Ali Park is directly opposite and open all day. Weavers Fields and Stepney Green Park are both a short walk east for anything larger.
• •Who's around. One of the most genuinely mixed areas in London: Bangladeshi and Somali communities that have been here for generations, medical students, City workers and creatives from Brick Lane.
• •What's around. Whitechapel Market runs six days a week and is by far the cheapest place in central London to buy fruit, vegetables, fish and spices.
• •Noise. Commercial Road and Whitechapel Road are both major arteries with night bus routes. Ask for a room away from the main road if you sleep lightly.
• •Healthcare. The Royal London Hospital and Barts Health services are within 250 metres, and there are several NHS practices accepting student registrations nearby.
